I am starting a new topic. All my ancestors are of Norwegian descent so now I would like to find out more information about my great-grandmother Maret Hovey or Hove. She was born November 29, 1849 in West Slidre, Norway. I don't have any other information on her family. I only know she came to the United States met and married my great-grandfather Jacob Anderson Hofsie on April 21, 1878 in Decorah, Iowa. They came to Polk County, Crookston, Minnesota in about 1881.

This should be the right Marit Jan Peter.

Her father Thor Thorgersen was from Hovi when he married Marit Pedersdatter Beito Jan. 7. 1849,
fathers; Thorger Nielsen and Peder Endresen.
Couple nr 1

This whole family including 6 children emigrated in 1865

Hovi is next to Lomen stave church in the north-western part of Lake Slidrefjorden central west in Oppland County

Census-1880 for Springfield, Winneshiek, Iowa:

Thom Thorgeson, 57 NOR
Mary Thorgeson, 54 NOR
Andrew Thorgeson, 23 NOR (= Endre b, 1855)
Martha Thorgeson, 21 NOR (= Marit b, 1858)
Nels Thorgeson, 19 NOR
Knudt Thorgeson, 17 NOR
Theodore Lommen, 13 IA (Nephew)

Nephew Theodore Lommen could be a son of A.O. & Sarah Lommen in Springfield, Winneshiek, Iowa.
Anders Olsen Lomen (23) (born 06 Oct 1825) and wife Sigri Engebretsdatter Hoime (19) (born 26 Oct 1829) are also from Vestre Slidre, Oppland, and emigrated on the brig Statsraad Vogt, dep Bergen May 5th 1848, arrived New York July 3rd.

Not sure how they relate to Thord Torgersen & Marit Pedersdr though. Theodore being a nephew to Thord & Marit looks impossible...

I am very excited at all this new information. Thanks to all who helped. It will take me a little while to sort through and document. Then I probably will have a few questions to ask.

I have put my ancestors in an ancestral chart to figure this out. I am not sure if I understand a few things in the message Eibache sent about Sigri Knudsdatter mother. Maybe I got the ancestors name mixed up, because I couldn't read any of the records in Norwegian. I tried to follow along and clicked on the bolded words and read parts of them and had trouble with others. I wondered who the mother of Signi Knudsdatter was and when she was born. She had a twin named Ole?
Also for Maret Hovey on her father's side I have her grandparents as Torger Nielsen and Marit Tordsdatter. Are there records for generations further back?
I would never have known my ancestors' names would change so much when looking for them. Such as Tarr Taryerson Hodalen arriving in Quebec and the passenger list on the Galathea listing him as Tord Torgersen Hedalen.
