I have very little to go on, but I am trying to locate the birthplace,
and the parents of a girl named Irene Berg. She was in American in 1920, and was married to Gustav Christiansen Haugland..
The 1920 census for the state of Wisconsin, USA. That
census also gives her birthplace as Norway. I would also be interested in learning a little abot the surname BERG in NORWAY. It just doesn't sound like a surname of Noewegian
origin. Any scrap of information would be useful.

Thank you
Dona

There were LOTS of Norwegians who were known as "Berg" or who chose to call themselves "Berg" after they emigrated.

You'll need to provide more information to get any real help.

Learn about Norwegian naming patterns and practices of the time. Berg would be an ADDRESS rather than a surname for the non-nobility classes. Study and learn:

Berg or farmames/Familynames containing Berg is common in Norway.
In 1900 it was about 40 000 people living on farms or used surnames containing Berg or just Berg .
Berg means mountain, hill, rock.
Solberg (Sunny berg), Sĝrberg (Southern berg), Fjelberg (Mountain berg) Eikeberg(Oak berg), Ravneberg (Ravens berg)etc. etc.

Many of these names was Americanized to Berg in USA.

Actually, the 1920 US census enumeration which shows Gustav O. Haugland, wife Irene, and baby daughter Elaine lists that Irene was born in Wisconsin. No record of a birth in Norway will be found for Irene Berg.

There is an Irene Berg listed in the 1900, 1905, and 1910 censuses in Dane County, Wisconsin. Since she was born in about 1898, I think this is your girl. I do not have full access to Ancestry right now, so I can't be sure. You may want to check into this farther and find out who her PARENTS were and where they may have come from.
