Hi!

I've recently started researching my grandmother's norwegian heritage. Her parents were both from Norway and came to Canada "sometime in the early 1900's." Unfortunately, we don't know much more than that! I'm looking for any help/guidance in order to find out more about them and when they arrived, what ship they were on etc.

Here's the information I know:

Lars Anderson, married to Anna. Travelled from Norway to Canada in the early 1900's. I don't know their dates of birth or marriage - I only know their names at this point. They eventually settled in Manitoba, Canada. I do not have exact dates of their travel or from which port they left or arrived from. HELP!

Hi,
the 1916 Canadian Census of Manitoba, Winnipeg North, shows this people:

Larce Anderson, born 1875, imm 1905
Anie Anderson, born 1876, imm 1906
Egene Anderson, born 1903, imm 1906
Alma Anderson , born 1905, imm 1906
Lilly Anderson, born 1908
Jenie Anderson, born 1911
Hardy Anderson, born 1914

Do you recognize any names?
Looks like Lars emigrated in 1905, and that his wife plus the two children Egene & Alma came over the following year.

Eugen Larson, b. 1902
Alma Larson, b. 1905

Thanks for the replies everyone. I believe the Census 1900 entry is actually correct...the times fit. Since Anderson (Andersen) is such a common name, the search has been difficult...

Lars Andreasen was confirmed Oct 12 1890, see #26 he was born on Tønsagereie April 8 and baptized Aug 13 1876, his parents were Andreas Johannesen and Karen Oline Pedersdatter.
Lars parents and two brothers in
1865
Parish records for Eidsvold lost in fire, Lars baptism and confirmation cannot be found.
Karen (Caren) Oline Pedersdatters parents are most likely Peder Pedersen and Gunnild Arnesdatter in the 1865 census together with Lars parents.

Just curious, was it common for last names to change (spelling wise)? I've seen many different variations and am guessing that it all depends on who was recording the names.

- good guessing - and how the recorder understood the verbal statements.

Spelling variations are completely expected - anywhere. Absolutely anywhere - not just Norway.

Does anyone have any tips for me regarding finding out more about Lars and Anne's parents? (Iver Hansen Kaustadejet, Andreas Johannessen etc) and even one step further - their parents? All of this information is fantastic and I'd like to see how far I can trace back. I'm thinking this will be quite a challenge, but am willing to put in the time!

Any guidance would be appreciated. I've done basic searches on a few online sites (familysearch.org) but haven't been lucky...
