I'm wondering if anyone knows of some possible Americanized names for the Norwegian name Åse? I've been searching using Åse, Ase and Aase, but am having no success. I appreciate any suggestions.
Tusen takk, Wanda |

Hi Wanda,
I've seen Ellen used for Aase and Haldis. Spelling might be an issue too, I've seen Aase as Ose and Ossa in census records. Americanizations of Norwegian first names might be an interesting subtopic on this forum.

Thanks Jackie! I will give those ideas a try. What about Esther? I've been trying that one too!
My great great grandmother used Emma as her nickname and her real name was Ingeborg. I wouldn't of known that, except someone mentioned on NorwayList that in some areas of Norway, Emma is a nickname for Ingeborg. My great grandfather, referred to his mother as Emma, but all of the Norwegian records list her as Ingeborg. I found that interesting.
Thanks again, Wanda |

Hi Wanda,
If the "American" name was Esther, I would guess a Norwegian equivalent might be Aaste or Astri(d). But sometimes these things are not logical but emotional...
Good Luck!

My 2nd great grand mother used her middle name. She was born Aase Marie born 1847. Her records in the states are as Mary.

Thank you all! I haven't seen a middle name listed for her yet, but I will check. That's a very good suggestion. :) It's a good thing, that I enjoy a challenge.
Takk igjen. Hils Wanda |

What is family name? Just wondering because my Aase had a youger sister Ingeborg that went by Emma in the states. Ingeborg's married name was Emma Olson. Her birth name as Ingeborg Johanna. Emma was her grandmother's name. They went to Wisconsin. |
