A question about American (US) rules might be better posed on an American website.

Where and for who did you find a "sponsor" listed on a document related to a passenger list?

I'm not sure who yet. But at some point I believe either my 3- great or 2nd great grandfather sent over money for my 2nd great grandmother to come over. She came over march 23, 1881 and got married early May. Which tells me that their families knew each other at the time.

The first emigrants from Norway was a complexed group, some left for political or religious reasons, some were adventurer and idealists.

Then whole families who owned small farms started to emigrate, they sold everything to get money for the ticket, after some years some managed to send money to Norway to help family members to emigrate, the pay back could be one year of work on the farm.
Then bacelors, leaseholder-sons or servants started to emigrate, to get money to the ticket they had to save all the income for 2-3 years, that included cottagers and leasholders too.
Some municipalities paid the ticket for welfare recipients to save money.

It happened poor families with many children send some of the young children with other emigrants, many tragic stories happened like leaving the old parents.

As you see the Saga of the Norwegian emigration to North America is very complexed, every emigration has it´s own story.

Late 1800 and in the beginning of 1900 most of the emigrants were bachelors and girls, the reason for the journey was often to earn money, 25% of these emigrants returned to Norway.

Intersting!! As it sounds, as long as they had money they could travel to the states and try to make a living so they could send their rest of the family to the united Sates. Some made it and some didn't. I know my Grandma Oline left her parents. I'm thinking that my grandpa Nelse sent her money because she married my grandapa Morris. My grandpa Nelse left Elverum with the whole family in 1868 and Oline left 1881 , Morris married Oline May 1881. I was just trying to figure if the Noweigan emigrants was required to have a sponsor in the united states before they could travel to united states.
