I am trying to find the name of the ship on which my grandmother Guri Pedersdatter came to America.

And. I woul;d like to know her destination in America.

She came with one of her brothers, Arne Pedersen I think, in 1883 or 1884. Both dates appear on later census. Both brothers came to the States but at separate times. One census for Ole or Oley shows his arrival as 1889.

Guri Pedersdatter was born September 9, 1863 at Gol, Hallingdal on Turhus farm. As far as I know she lived on that farm with her family until she emigrated. I think she met my Grandfather at Hope, North Dakota.

Any help you can give me will be appreciated. I am also curious about the other brother's destinations.

I have never been able to find my Grandmother on a US census prior to her marriage. She changed her name to Julia Petersn in the States. I don’t know if this was her idea or the Immigration people.

Her parents were Peder Arnesen and Unn Olsdatter.

A brother Ole and a sister Mari stayed in Norway.

Also, s it possible to find an earlty picture of Turhus farm?

Hi Gordon,

Golsboka III VI, 508-511 contains some information about this family which might be of interest to you:

Guri b 1863 d 1937 m 1889 Samuel McCannMann (an Irishman) 7 children with him, farmed in Alberta, Canada, wrote her name as Julia in U.S.

The article also says she came to America in 1884. If she came directly to Dakota Territory she would have been counted in the 1885 Dakota Territorial census, the North Dakota counties of which have been transcribed and are searchable online:

http://library.ndsu.edu/archives/databases

If Samuel and Guri left before 1900 for Alberta, there would be no US Federal census which would include them as the 1890 census was largely destroyed.

The article also says that Arne Person 1865-1942 didnot come to America at the same time as Guri but came in 1892 and settled at first near Davenport and later at Wyndmere N.D.

Another brother Ole Person 1868-1926 came to America in 1893 and settled with at McHenry, N.D. He wrote his name as Oley Pederson.

Julia is often the anglicized form of Guri and Person is often recorded as Pederson.

Hope is in Steele County. My understanding is that civil marriage records likely donot exist in Steele County prior to 1894. They may have married in some other county however, Traill is next to the east, and Grand Forks is to the north east and Cass County is south east. The early marriage records for each of those three counties are available online and searchable. If it was indeed conducted in Steele, she may have married in one of the churches there. If it was in a Norwegian Lutheran church, the registers of it may be in existence yet. All Norwegian lutheran church registers which existed in the 1970s have been microfilmed and are availabe for loan through the archives of the ELCA; www.elca.org

#61693 is probably your gal, age is a bit hinky and destination is subject to interpretation (my guess is Sauk Centre) (from the digitalarkivet)

This Guri Pedersen arrived Quebec on May 4th, 1884, sailing on the ship Lake Huron, departuring Liverpool.
Source: Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935
But the age is even more "hinky" here, she is indexed as born 1856...

You expressed an interest in a picture of the farm. My first thought is that their might be a photo in one of the published history/genealogy books for that area.
"Boka om Gol", 7? volumes by Hallvard Svello, Terje Østro;
"Slekter i Gol", 2 volumes by Guro Hoftun Narum.

How-to use and how to obtain bygdebøker is discussed in the following series of articles -

Looking at the reference to Guri Pedersen in ancestry.com gives the following ship listing.

Name: Guri Pedersen
Gender: Female
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856
Date of Arrival: 4 May 1884
Vessel: Lake Huron
Search Ship Database: View the 'Lake Huron' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: Quebec, Quebec
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England

The orginal manifest is extremely difficult to read and her age listed on the orginal manifest does look like a 28 but is so difficult to read that it could also be a 23 or even 21.

Also she is the only Pedersen listed on the Lake Huron, no sign of an Arne Pedersen, did they travel together.

Hi Gordon,

Joanne is right the bygdebok Boka om Gol VI contains the picture I sent you this morning. All the owners of Turhus back to the first known are relatives of yours (until 1991). The three younger siblings of Guri stayed in Norway. Ola 1870-1960 eventually owned the farm, the younger brother Per died in 1876 and the sister Mari 1875-1954 married a man named Ola Ivarson nørdre Brennhovd.

The Gol bygdebok are still for sale. In 2000 when I visited the city hall had pallets of them.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

I have received several letters from my Grandmother's trunk, all in Norwegian. Two are from a brother Ole who stayed in Norway. Two others are from her brothers Arne and Oley in North Dakota. How can I send these to you, one at a time, to be translated?
Or is that a service you provide?
I have scanned a few. Some are two pages and others are four pages in length.
Two are dated 1919 and 1921.
I have tried to have them translated here but was unsuccessful. My friend who translated letters in the past from cousins in Norway has passed away.
I hope you can help me.

To send them by e-mail is probably the best way.
