I'm looking for a passenger named Peder Jacobsen, born in 1846 near Trondheim, Norway. He left Norway in 1869 and arrived in Quebec. I have not been able to locate him in the emigrant protocols in Norway. He should be 23 or 23 years at the time he disembarked in Quebec.

In the passenger lists I have located a 'P. Jacobsen' (24 years) who arrived in Quebec with the Allan Line ship Nova Scotian 30 April 1869. However, his name is lined out with a note that seems to be 'Not at clearance'. This must mean that he never was aboard this ship? Link to passenger list (no. 455).

Another candidate is 'Peter Jacobsen', 20 years old, who left from Liverpool on board the North American, also an Allan Line ship, and arrived in Quebec 24 May 1869. Link

It is probably a long shot to think that these two persons are identical. I know that Peder arrived in Quebec in 1869, and if he did not get on board the Nova Scotian he must have been on another ship.

Can anybody help me in the right direction?

Do you have information on his life in Canada or the US if he did not stay in Canada and you are only looking for his passage over or are you trying to find out other information on him. It can be helpful in connecting people to events if other data can be used to help pinpoint dates.

Hi, and thanks for your reply

I know just about everything about this person, both from his life in Norway and later in the US, so information about his Atlantic crossing is the only thing I need.

He can also be seen here on page 4 last entry. This is the site you used in your posting. I used the search function, ship Iris, 1870.

Yes, I'm aware of this person. However, this ship arrived 19 June 1870 in Quebec, and my man is listed in the 1870 US census which commenced on 1 June 1870. This puts him out of the picture. I'm quite sure that he arrived in 1869, yes.

I assume that he came to the US as a single person, not married and no other family members travelling with him? Also what name and state do you find him in, in the 1870 US Census and have you also found him in the 1900 US Census.

Could he have have arrived in the US any earlier, such as 1868. Here is a Peter Jacobsen left Liverpool England April 16, 1868 and arrived in Quebec May 2, 1868. Age 21. The ship is the Hibernian. The passenger is 339.

Yes, he arrived as single with no other family members, as far as I have found out. In 1870 he was located in Dunn, WI, as Peter Jackson, where we worked in a sawmill. He is listed in all following censuses until 1930 (except from the 1890 census which is lost).

I suppose he could have arrived earlier, but he always said that he arrived in 1869. The 1900, 1920 and 1930 censuses say that his year of immigration is 1869, while the 1910 census says 1871. In the passenger list from Hibernian he is listed as a miner, but I think labourer would have been more appropriate. I'm pretty sure that his initial plan was to work in a lumber camp.

Searching the Canadian Emmigration Records on Ancestry.com for Peder Jacobsen, born 1846 +/- 5 years, born in Norway and immigrated 1869 +/- 2 years gives the following list of people.

The data are Name, Birth Year, Date of Arrival, Ship, Place of Arrival, Port of Departure. if listed.

Peder Jacobsen abt 1846 19 Jun 1870 Iris Quebec, Quebec Stavanger, Norway
Peder Jacobsen abt 1853 8 Jun 1871 Undine Quebec, Quebec Stavanger, Norway
John Peder Jacobsen abt 1855 1866 Norden Quebec
Peder Jacobsen abt 1853 27 Nov 1893 Numidian Halifax, Nova Scotia and Portland, Maine Liverpool, England
Peder Jacobsen abt 1856 9 Jul 1883 Toronto Quebec, Quebec Belfast, Ireland; Liverpool, England
Peter Jacobsen abt 1846 1867 Hibernian Quebec
Peter Jacobsen abt 1848 30 May 1870 Moravian Quebec, Quebec Liverpool, England; Londonderry, Ireland
Peter Jacobsen abt 1849 1869 North American Quebec
Peter H Jacobsen abt 1844 1866 Peruvian Quebec

There are probably five candidates from the above list. Determing which is the correct Peder Jacobsen will be difficult. It would be a big help to have the emmigration date from the Norwegian records.
