Is there any record of Niels (Nielson) Stedje (son of Niels Andersen Stedje and Christi Oldsdatter) born 11 Jan 1825 emigrating? His half-brother Erik Nielson Stedje emigrated in 1856. I was wondering if he or any of their sisters emigrated also--Onni (b. 1818), Gjertrud (b. 1819), Christi (b. 1823), Guri (b. 1827) Thanks for your help! Lue |

Onni (Unni) was at Olstad with husband and 6 daughters in 1865 she was married April 1 1845, may have had a child earlier than the oldest daughter. No certain trace of the others after their confirmation when they were 14 - 16 years old. |

I have the page (353) that gives the names of those that emigrated when the Erik Neilson Stedje family did. I will go as far back in the book as I can and as far forward as I can to see if I can find Erik's brother (Neils Neilson Stedje) and any other sisters (Gjertrude, Christi and #2Guri. Did women travel/emigrate alone? Gjertrud (37 years old), Christi (33 years old) and Guri #2 (29 years old) at the time of Erik's emigration. Women of that time seem to marry older than younger. Any insight or links is certainly appreciated--very much appreciated. Thank you |

The confirmation records are: Gjertrud June 1 1834, see #68 Christe July 30 1837, see #32 Guri July 1 1844, see #46 After confirmation it was normal to leave home to get work, marriages would be between 20 and 30 years old, some also a little later. Emigrations could be from 17/18 years old and onwards. None of the sisters found at the 1865 census. |

Thank you again for all of your help--it is invaluable!!!
Is there any indication in documents that Erick Neilson Stedje/Kari Johannesdatter or Erick's father/mother ( Neils Andersen Stedje/Onni Torlildsdatter) step-mother (Christi Olsdatter) were 'cotters?' What I found farmer/farm dweller--is that different than a cotter? Are there any documents that tell if either Erick or his father Neils owned any land or did they always farm for someone else? Since Erik emigrated from Fosshaugen, does that mean he was working there instead of Stedje? Once again, I thank you for all of your help. |

In the 1801 census for Stedje Niels Andersen is recorded as "Bonde og gaardbeboer" = farmer living on the farm. His siblings are living with him on the farm. (indicating his parents had the farm before him?) Stedje was a large "estate" and the owner was called "Proprietair" = proprietor. Other families on Stedje is called "Huusmand med jord " = cottar with land. Based on this it is reasonable to conclude that he was better off than a cottar, and I believe he could have had some owneship of the land he was farming. Fosshaugen is not recorded as a farm/cottars place in the 1801 census, Fosse is the farm. Most likely Fosshaugen was a cottars place, whether Erik was the cottar when he emigrated or was a servant I could not tell.
