American authorities did NOT make people change their names. There were NOT unacceptable names to American authorities. People modified and/or changed their names by their own choice. All they had to do was USE a different name in their day to day lives. As long as such name change was not for purposes of fraud - it is completely legal.

The US census indexes (1870-1930) show a lot of people using the surname Haglund and almost all of those are of Scandinavian origins - Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian.

Online study material to learn about Norwegian naming practices and patterns.

Hi, sorry for my ignorance (this is all new to me) and no offense was meant by my original question/quote. I appreciate the links provided and I'm sure they will be helpful... what I should have said was ''people changed their names willingly and made them more english sounding'' Thank you for your time and I'm sure other people reading this will not make the same mistake I did...

The baptismal record for your "Jessie (Jessica) (Kirsten) Thorson, b.04 Aug 1876" is #26 she was baptized Kirsten on April 30 1876 in the Klepp parish in Rogaland. She was born April 8 (not Aug 4) 1876 and her parents were Jens Thorsen and Kirstin Stoltenberg Jonsdatter at the Fristad farm. Her name would therefore have been Kirsten Jensdatter, Fristad.
Her parents were married Nov 14 1867 in Haaland parish, Rogaland, see #22 Jens Thorsen was at that time 21 years old and Kirstin Stoltenberg Jonsdatter was 26 years old.
