Hi everyone.
Has anyone come across the surname Stejner or Steiner?
I have Edvard Stejner, intermission muscian and wife Gunil Christiansdatter, Hauge from Trondhiem, listed as parents of Edvard Christian Gustav Steiner born April 30th 1830 and Baptised at home on May 26th. This was confirmed in Church May 31st in Leinstrand, Melhus, Sor Trondelag.
I would really appreciate any help with either of these surnames.
Many thanks
Annie (in Australia)

Your previous thread on his forum raised the surname Steiner before.

The birth/baptismal record for Edvard Christian Gustav Steiner (b. 30 Apr 1830) from the Leinstrand i Melhus parish records does not list the parents as married. Rather it indicates that child was born out of wedlock.

It is likely that the father, Edvard Steiner, was not originally from Norway. It would be more likely that he could have been from Denmark.

In 1836 marrying Christine Caroline Antonette Monster in Skive, Viborg, Denmark.
In 1842 having a child, Adolf Carl Gothardt, with his danish wife in Bragernes (Drammen), Buskerud, Norway.

Hello Hopkins, thank you for your reply.

Yes I have requested help for this surname before

Yes, you are right they were not married and child was born out of wedlock - this I already knew - it was a mistake on my part when jotting down the information - thank you for correcting me.

I also have Edvard Christian Gustav Steiner marrying Else Mariane Billingthone 18th July 1858 in Bergen Cathedral. She was born in 1830 in Egersund, Vest Agder & died May 1907
in Bergen, Hordaland, Norway. They had 4 children between 1856 - 1863.

Perhaps Chrisitne died & he remarried. Did you notice any other children for Christine & Edvard or a death for Christine by any chance?

Do you think Steiner could of been Stejner in Denmark? I am trying to trace where Edvard origninated from.

On the Ellis Island records I did find Edvard Fredrik Steiner from Stavanger Norway but that was in 1923 and he was 21. Perhaps there are Steiners in that area of Norway? I would love to contact them if there are ...

Many thanks Hopkins.

The 1858 marriage must be for the son Edvard. I am not a researcher of the Steiner name and have no information of any children or later wives.

If you decide to research in Denmark for possible records of the father or earlier family then I would recommend that you keep all possible spellings of the name in mind.

The 1900 Norwegian census database listed about 20 persons with a surname of Steiner.
http://www.rhd.uit.no/indexeng.html

A passenger manifest for an arrival at Ellis Island in 1923 would be expected to list a great deal of detail about this additional Steiner that you mention. Place of birth, next of kin, where going to visit, etc. Study that material completely and perhaps you will find your answer.
