I am search of any information on my Great Grandfather Karl Andersen. Per some family records, it states that he was a ship master. Unfortunatly, I do not have a date to when he came to the US, however I believe it to be in the 1880's.
He is from the Grimstad/Froland area. He had a wife by the name of Hanna. He had a brother named Kittel Andersen b 1841, brother named Schjelluf Andersen born 1843 and a sister named Maren. The Farm name was Hurv.
If any one has any information, please email me.
Thank you in advance.

Some additional information. Just looked at the 1920 US Census. Karl Andersen changed name to Carl Andersen. It also states that he immegrated to the US in 1888 and was naturalized in 1893.. He lived in Elizabeth Port, NJ.
Again any information would be appreciated.

There are some persons that could match your information in the Emigration records for Kristiansand in 1888. Among them a sailor, Karl Andersen born in 1845 recident of Dybvaag. I cant find a match in the 1865 census for Froland where the Hurv farms are.
If you think he lived in Grimstad, or near there, here are the possible registers of sailors to check (from my updated article about the inscription of sailors:
GRIMSTAD KRETS: V-21 Hovedrulle no. 1-766 1860-1869 Microfilmed V-22 Hovedrulle no. 1-768 1868-1870 Microfilmed V-23 Hovedrulle no. 769-1528 1870-1877 Microfilmed V-29 Skipper- and styrmannsrulle (captains & mates) 1860-1868

[quote] Borge,
I just received some information from someone in Norway regarding the Hurv farm. It shows my Great Grandfather Karl being born in 1856. Although his brothers Kittel and Schelluf show being born in Froland Hurv, His sister Maren and himself state being born in Fjaere (not sure what that means or where that is.
Would this mean that the family might have moved to a different farm or town? Any ideas? This could help me a bunch.
Also, thank you for the info on the sailors. Should I want to access the microfilm, how would I go about doing it?

It would at least be of some value to find out where Karl was living as he was enrolled in the sailors register. Try finding them in the 1865 census at the Digitalarkivet.
I don't really know how you should get those films when you live in the US, I know you can buy them from the Statsarkivet, but that would cost you, and he might not be on the film. I will check with them.

I talked to a very nice person at the Riksarkivet in Oslo today about this issue.
You can by films from them, they will cost you about Norwagian Kroner 500,- for a roll of 30 meters (average). Postage in addition. He was not sure if you could get access to the films in the USA, but he thinks that the LDS has the films in Salt Lake City, so you could ask them if they can give you access to their material at one of their family centers.
