I'm looking for information on Nels and Martin Bestul. Nels is the father and he was born in 1829 and he's from Norway. His son is Martin Bestul and he was born in wisconsin. Nels is listed on a 1870 census as living in Scandinavia, Waupaca, Wisconsin and Martin is listed in a 1910 census as living in Alban, Portage County, Wisconsin.

The Bestul farmname can be found in Gjerpen, Telemark, so that would be a good place to search for his origin.

Nils Rasmussen Bestul b. 12 Dec 1828 d. 1921, wife Anne Gurine Amundsdatter from Brekke in Sv. (1834-1913). Emigrated to America. Not found in the emigrant protocols.
7 children listed in Gjerpen Bygdebok under farmname Bestul. Nils' father was Rasmus Jonsen Gromstul b. 01 Oct 1799, d. in America, son of Jon Torkildsen and Gunhild Rasmusdatter.
Rasmus married in Siljan 26 Sep 1824 Dorthea Nilsdatter Hogstad, Siljan born 24 Apr 1802, died in America.

Nils' siblings John and Ingeborg are on the bark Superb that left Skien May 13 1849, together with among others Karen Simmensdatter Solveraad (aka Karen Roe) and her parents.

Hi,
Anne Gurine Anundsdatter was born on Brekke in Sandsvĉr parish, Buskerud County on Nov. 17. 1835 to cottager/leaseholder Anund Olsen Brekke and Grete Katrine Olsdatter.
She was bap. at home Nov. 24 and in church next year on June 28, see right page #42

The reason the baptism in the church took so long was that Brekke is located to the wilderness on the other side of the mountain Skrim

Do you have the information on Anne Gurine Anundsdatter, her siblings, parents and ancestors?

If not I can bring it up here.

I know this family, or at least some of their descendants. Have you read about Rasmus Bestul and his son John Rasmussen, who was the first of the family to come to Wisconsin? "From The Indian Land" by Malcolm Rosholt devotes a large portion of page 60 to this family. There is also a picture of Mr. and Mrs. Rasmus Bestul on page 61. It states that they came to Scandinavia in 1853.

If you don't have access to this book, just let me know and I'll send you a copy of the page and picture.

I figured that the Bestul name was known to you Wanda.

Nice picture on page 61 in the book "From the Indian Land" I recieved from you.

Bestul is located to Luksefjell, a mountain village betwen the towns Kongsberg and Skien and a sub parish in Skien.
Bestul is mentioned already in Bishop Eysteins "Rĝde bok" Farm register from 1398 and was also a guest house with accommodation and food and was a rather large farm.
A chapel was build in Luksefjell 1857, see here.

Anund Olsen Brekke and his older brother brother Hans b. a. 1790 owned Brekke together from 1808.
Hans Olsen Brekke married Kari Pedersdatter Olledalen from Ĝvre (Upper) Sandsvĉr, two daughters;
- Margit ca 1818 married 1846 to Halvor Knutsen Ċjord from Tufte in Gjerpen parish, Telemark, 7 children.
Anund, Kari, Margit Halvor and the 7 children emigrated to USA 1865.
- A daughter Berte Gurine b 1836 emigrated to USA alredy 1860 where she maried John Johnsen/ Olsen? Furuvold from Norway.

Brekke was taken over by Hans brother Anund mentioned above, the value of the farm was 750 Spesiesdaler, Hans netto fortune was 116 Spesiesdaler.

Hi! Wow how do you know the bestul. Martin Bestul's daughter ella was my husbands grandma she married Peter Emil Roe. I would appreciate it if you could send me the picture you mentioned above. Do you have any other pictures from the bestul side of this family. My father-in-law was not one to care about pictures unfortunately. I just printed information off about the bestul farm and on the bottom, it said that it is still used for rentals, holiday home etc. Do you happen to know if there is a picture in existance around the internet. I thought since it can be rented out, there might be a picture of it. You can e-mail me any information at WriteJanice@aol.com

Thanks
Janice

Janice,
I will send you the copies.
My Dad was good friends with Harold Bestul, who would of been Charles son, I believe. So Ella and Charles should be siblings. I also went to school with Bestul's.

Kċre,
I thought you might like that picture. Rare to see such a clear picture like that.
