Hi,
On the face of it, generally, neither James nor Robinson would be commonly occuring names in Norway. But Norwegian names can be adapted to more English sounding names. You say that you have gotten are far back as James b. 1799, which might mean that you have found him in in the 1850 US Federal Census. That census, provided he's living in 1850, should give a birthplace for him, does it give Norway or something else?
