Hello!

My ggggrandfather Anders Ellefson f. 1820. I found his baptism record.

Source information: Telemark county, Heddal, Parish register (official) nr. 5 (1814-1837), Birth and baptism records 1820, page 67-68.
Pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7934&idx_id=7934&uid=ny&idx_side=-35
Imagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20061211330260.jpg

He is # 35 (6th listing on the left page).
Can anyone read where he is from in Heddal? I'm having troubles making out the farm name.

Thanks!
- Heidi

Anders Ellewsen
Born 29 Aug 1820, chr 17 Sep 1820, Heddal, Telemark
Parents: Ellew Torgusen & Guri Olsdr

I think the farmname is Øgaarn .
Also referred to in this topic....

Census-1801 shows one Ellev Torgusen (15) at farm "Langerød Med Luuthen" in Hitterdal.
Current spelling of Øgaarn is Øygarden, and closest farms are Langerud and Luten...

HI,
the farm was Ødegaarden nr 83/12.

Ellev was baptised Oct. 1. 1786, married Guri Olsdtr. Aase Dec. 27. 1813.
Ellevs parents were Torjus Ellefsen b. 1754, soldier in Telemarkske Regiment, died on Ødegaarden 1824 and Margit Gunlecksdatter.

Torjus Ødegaarden was born to Ellef Torjussen Ødegaarden and Tone Kittilsdater Lien, 7 children;
Torbjørg 1751-1809
Torjus 1754 1828
Jøran 1756-1756
Jøran 1757, lived 1784
Kittil 1760, lived 1784
Kari 1763-1816
Peder 1766-68.

Probate after Thone Kittilsdatter is dated Feb. 24. 1777.

Torjus married again 1780 to Ingeborg Olsdatter, a son 1883 died 10 weeks old.

Probate after Torjus dated Sept. 25. 1784 tells he was part-owner in Luten, netto fortune 155 Riksdaler.

The probate registers in Norway will be online within 2013 if I remember right.
Ødegaard=Deserted farm.

Amazing! Thanks!
You both have quite the "search" talent....
My eyes were looking at the Ø in Øgaarn on the baptism record and was thinking it was a S. I would have never got this far...

It can take us a little bit more time to get used to the characters that we don't use in English. Sometimes it helps to study the same person's handwriting to get a feel for their "style". On that same page in entry #37 is a baby called Lars SvenningS (the capital S at the end is my way of indicating that old fashioned S that looked like a lower case f ... we see it in old records EVERYWHERE - check out the US Declaration of Independence...) The writer has a very different style that he uses for a capital S. From there you can work on it as a matter of elimination - it works sometimes.

Ødegaarden has various spellings in the records and censuses.

Ellevs baptism Oct. 1. 1786 its spelled O(Ø)degaarden, the letter Ø in those days were spelled;
O with one or two " above.
Probably the " are hidden under the underline in Ellevs name.

Right page 5. undelined name from bottom:
Første Oct. (Oct. 1.) Ellev. parents Torjus Ellevesen and Margit Gunlecksdatter Ødegaarden. Godparents were from Luten (Luthen) and Lien, see here

Anders Ellefsen had 8 siblings, a brother Torjus born 1818 married Anne Nilsdatter 1846, their son Ole Torjusen b. 1855 , carpenter, married 1881 Thone Torjusdatter Moen.

Ole Torjusen Ødegaarden and Thone Torjusdatter emigrated to North Dakota 1902 with 6 children, see 1. page #52-53 (July 15) and 59-60-61-62-63 and 64 (Sept. 16) here

Is this known to you?
