Good afternoon! A family connection (details below) came to the US with the story that the father of the family and the eldest son were lost off the coast of Kragero Telemark. As the story goes, the wife watched them set out in a boat and witnessed the sinking. The widow then emigrated with her young children to Wisconsin (Shawano County) where they settled permanently.
So far no one has found concrete information to support the Kragero story. Also, there are conflicting dates for the deaths and also for the arrival of the family in the US. The details known are as follows:
Inger Claudine Halvorsen (mother) b 21 Nov 1854, c 10 Dec 1854 in Brevik. d 20 Jan 1939 Hutchins, Shawano, WI Jens Larsen (father) b? 11 Aug 1845 Bamble, d? 12 Feb 1892 at sea (date debatable) Children: Lars Laurentius Larsen b 24 May 1875 Bamble, d? 12 Feb 1892 at sea (date debatable) Oliver Larsen 4 July 1877 Bamble, d 4 January 1958 Hutchins, Shawano, Wisconsin Annie Larsen b Feb 1880 in Norway (birthplace unknown) Peter Larsen b Apr 1885 in Norway (birthplace unknown) Olga Larsen b Sep 1889 in Norway (birthplace unknown) Hans Carl Larsen b 31 Jul 1891 Oslo, d 27 Feb 1982 Mattoon, Shawano, Wisconsin
Information about Annie, Peter and Olga is sparse; no death records for Lars and his father. There is also a story that Hans Carl Larsen was a posthumous baby which means that the death dates for father and son listed above would be incorrect. Various emigration dates also have them arriving in the US from 1891 to 1892 (I need to follow up more closely on this.)
I do have Inger Claudine Halvorsen's digitalarkivet christening information as the Halvorsen family was close to my g-g grandparents who were witnesses for this event; she was also a friend of my g-grandmother (they were the same age) who emigrated 10 years before her to Shawano County and this may or may not have influenced where she came with her family as they settled within a few miles of each other.
There just may not be concrete or verifiable information out there, but sometimes when I look at records too long I miss the obvious, so perhaps a new set of eyes may notice something new.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed even a glimmer of light on this story. I also have another Telemark lost-at-sea mystery but that is for another posting! Kathy

Hi, One place one must start to look. Perhaps the emigration record for Inger Claudine Halvorsen and children tells in what municipality she lived when her husband and son died if she emigrated shortly after.
The dates for Inger Claudine is correct, in Norway she probably lived acc. traditional Norwegian naming practise as Inger Claudine Larsdatter. Her father was seaman Lars Halvorsen, she was Lars daughter, Inger Claudine Larsdatter (Larsdaughter)
If that correspond the childrens lastname was Jensen and Jensdatter since the father and Inger Claudines husband was Jens Larsen. In some emigration records the traditional last name for wife and children are changed.

By 1865 Inger Claudia, her parents and siblings had moved to Kragerø.
Jens and Inger Claudia were married Aug 3 1874 at Skåtøy, see #28.
See also Skåtøy kirke - zoom in on the map and see Røssholmen where they later were living.
The bapt. record for Lars Laurensius is #55. He was confirmed in 1889, see #4.

She is listed as Clara Larsen in Hutchins town, Shawano, Wisconsin in census-1900. But no new info in that census as far as I can see.

It is correct that father and son died at sea in 1892 "Omkom under Fiske i orkanagtig Storm 1 Mil udenfor Portør", see top records here. Hans Karls bapt record is #47.

The LDS Family History Library online catalog includes some valuable information about the church records of Skåtøy -- Contains parish registers from Skåtøy parish with Levang chapel in Skåtøy clerical district. Skåtøy parish was separated from Sannidal clerical district in 1877. See Sannidal clerical disrict for earlier records.
There is also a comment by someone online that Kragerø, Skåtøy, and Sannidal have a long and intertwined history. |

Skåtøy is an island, former sub parish in Sannidal municipality and was separated 1882. Skåtøy merged with Kragerø town 1960 and is the largets island in Kargerø municipaity south from Bamble.
Skåtøy, Portør where they wrecked outside is south in the map.

Someone was researching this same family in 2005 on another message forum. Much of the information was found for him too - but he struggled to understand that names can change and that people can make mistakes when remembering years.

Hello again, I had no internet connection for most of yesterday and part of this morning unfortunately, so I could not respond until now. I am still absorbing all of this information and will respond in a bit. In the meantime, I should also have included Inger's baptism, but I see that several people already picked up my error in my not giving the patronymic -- she was referred to as Halvorsen by other people in the family, so I just never corrected that. Here is the baptism link http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20061205050592.jpg Her christening is entry 43.
On another note, could I know what "Omkom under Fiske i orkanagtig Storm 1 Mil udenfor Portør" means? I could only make out that they were killed during fishing. thanks in advance.
I received an email from a Larsen family connection just last week as we were trying to puzzle out information and I know she will be extremely happy with this information. We wanted concrete information about where they came from and how -- hearing family stories is one thing but having the evidence is so much better.
Thank you all so much for this information!

Omkom under Fiske i orkanagtig Storm 1 Mil udenfor Portør.
Perished during fishing in a hurricane-like storm 10 km outside Portør. (Portør is a peninsula in Kragerø, Telemark).
