Anders Pedersen Strøm was travelling from Oslo to Chicago on 27 July 1869. It seems like he was the only member of his family that went to America.
He was born in Sweden in ab. 1830, but went to Sarpsborg in Norway where he married a swedish woman, Christine Svendsdatter. They had 4 children from 1859 to 1868. In 1875 Christine was a widow, living in Sarpsborg.
I haven´t found Anders dead in Sarpsborg, so I wonder what happened to him. Can he be found in the passenger lists ?

Yes, in the 1865 census he´s called Peder Andersen Strøm, but his name must be Anders Pedersen (Pehrson) Strøm. They got married in Tune (Sarpsborg) 17 July 1857 and his name was Anders Pehrson. He was a carpenter.

These are the three Andrew or Anders Pederson's in the Illinois death index, before 1916. None of them fit with our Anders/Andrew being born abt 1830. I did not find any Anders/Andrew Strom in the index.

Interesting that the birth record for Carl Julius shows father as Anders Peterson Strøm and mother Kirstine Svensdatter Feng born Sept. 3, 1859. See

Similarly and in contrast to the 1865 Census the birth record for Amanda Josefine born Sep 8, 1861 shows her father as Anders Peterson Strøm and mother as Chirstine Svensdatter.

This is a long shot but the name is similar and the page also contains the names Axel Norling age 31 and Ole Christoffersen age 28 only a few names away from Strom. Axel Norling and Ole Christoffersen are both names from the Emigranter fra Oslo list you linked to.
Name: Arbers Strom Arrival Date: 19 Aug 1869 Birth Year: abt 1833 Age: 36 Gender: Male Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian Place of Origin: Norway Port of Departure: Copenhagen, Denmark Destination: United States of America Port of Arrival: New York Port Arrival State: New York Port Arrival Country: United States Ship Name: Santiago de Cuba

Here is the record for Ole Christoffersen who is the name next to Anders Strom on the orginal ship manifest. From Ancestry.com
Name: Ole Christoffersen Arrival Date: 19 Aug 1869 Birth Year: abt 1841 Age: 28 Gender: Male Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian Place of Origin: Norway Port of Departure: Copenhagen, Denmark Destination: United States of America Port of Arrival: New York Port Arrival State: New York Port Arrival Country: United States Ship Name: Santiago de Cuba

Here is the record for Axel Norling who is two names above Anders Strom. The name is in the orginal manifest is clearly AxEl Norling.
Name: Ax E C Norling Arrival Date: 19 Aug 1869 Birth Year: abt 1838 Age: 31 Gender: Male Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian Place of Origin: Norway Port of Departure: Copenhagen, Denmark Destination: United States of America Port of Arrival: New York Port Arrival State: New York Port Arrival Country: United States Ship Name: Santiago de Cuba

This then is likely Marie Mørk from the Emigranter fra Oslo list. The original manifest clearly is Marie Morek that has been transcribed into Florek. She is on page 3 of the orginal manifest.
Name: Maria Florek Arrival Date: 19 Aug 1869 Birth Year: abt 1812 Age: 57 Gender: Female Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian Place of Origin: Norway Port of Departure: Copenhagen, Denmark Destination: United States of America Port of Arrival: New York Port Arrival State: New York Port Arrival Country: United States Ship Name: Santiago de Cuba

And finally this is likely Gustav Olsen Scherve who has been transcribed slightly differently. He is on page 2 of the orginal mnifest. I think that this is probably enough to be fairly certain that this is the correct Anders Strom.
Name: Gustav Scherrov Arrival Date: 19 Aug 1869 Birth Year: abt 1844 Age: 25 Gender: Male Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian Place of Origin: Norway Port of Departure: Copenhagen, Denmark Destination: United States of America Port of Arrival: New York Port Arrival State: New York Port Arrival Country: United States Ship Name: Santiago de Cuba

Gustav ends up in Chicago, Illinois as a printer - Source: 1880 US census where his surname appears to be spelled as "Sherway". The age and country of birth are right.
I can find only one reference online for the "Exelensen Toll" (listed for all of these on the Oslo emigration protocol list). The poster's ancestor was another passenger on that ship. She recounts that the ship took them as far as Copenhagen and the rest of the trip was on the ship Santiago De Cuba. http://newsarch.rootsweb.com/th/read/NORWAY/1999-08/0935543896
I've been trying to find the other names on the voyage after they arrived in the US (searching census indexes) - but thus far Gustav has been the first found. |
