Hi,
I am looking to confirm what I recently found. I don’t know if possible with what little info I have.

Ole Baker’s wife Julia Canuteson was born here in the USA LaSalle Co.,
I confirmed yesterday that Jens Canuteson was her father born in Norway. He was born abt 1817 In Stavenger Norway.

Jen’s had brother’s

Halvor

Ole -- Tombstone here for Ole says he was born in 1807

Canute

1.)Would like to know who the parents of these boys were.
2.)If the year of exit from Norway could be found.

I found this info on who I believe to be Halvor’s son.

CANUTESON, Ole A.
TX 30th Cav Co C. CSA. Residence: Norse, Texas. Born Born “Ole Andreas Knudsen” on 29 Apr 1834 in Kendall County, Illinois, of parents from Stavanger, Norway. Civil War: Enlisted for three years or the war on 1 Jul 1862 at Waco, Texas. Private. He was sick in hospital at Houston, Texas, from 26 May to 31 May 1863. Post war: Died 15 Jan 1920 in Bosque County, Texas. Sources: ("Norwegian Soldiers in Confederate Forces" by C.A.Clausen & Derwood Johnson, publ. in Norwegian-American Studies, volume 25, Northfield, Minnesota. p114) (Ulvestad p303) (www.borgerkrigen.info) "Ole A. Knudsen".

I believe Kendall Co., IL is wrong. Should be Kendall, NY. The census records I find list NY as place of birth.

Thanks, Jodie

Hi, this is a hard nut to crack Jodie.

More than half way down in this site tells he was a soldier in 30th Texas Cavalry Regiment as Ole Knudsen (Kanuteson) born in Kendall, NY.

Since LaSalle is mentioned, this next can be a namesake and a blind track.
Not all the info correspond, found it in LDS records:

Ole Knudsen born in Miller, La Salle, Illinois, parents; Jens Knudsen and Margrete Johnson.
Ole Knudsen married July 18. 1878 in Rutland, La Salle to Anna G. Irgens b. in Ruthland, La Sall, parents; Henry Bravis and Sonovo Johnson.

One of the difficulties in this instance is the large number of Ole Canuteson (Canutson or Knudson etc.) listed in Lasalle County, Illinois in this time frame. Here is the 1880 US Census for a Ole Canutson married to Anna. However this Ole is listed as having been born in Illinois in abt. 1847, making him neither of the two Ole's found in the 1850 US Census.

Name: Ole Canutson
Home in 1880: Rutland, La Salle, Illinois
Age: 33
Estimated birth year: abt 1847
Birthplace: Illinois
Relation to Head of Household: Self (Head)
Spouse's name: Anna
Father's birthplace: Nor.
Mother's birthplace: Nor.
Neighbors: View others on page
Occupation: Farmer
Marital Status: Married

Yes you are Right about the Ole Canuteson’s.
I don’t know which Ole belongs to which Brother,

Jen’s/Yans father Had Son’s Halvor, Ole and Canute

Jens/Yans had son’s named: Ole and Knute

Halvor had sons named: Ole and Knute

Ole had 1 son named: Samuel (Ole buried here in LaSalle Co., IL)

Canute had sons named: Ole and Andrew

In Samuel’s (Son of Ole) Probate file.
It states that Ole son of Canute lives in Waco Tx in 1919 (No dates given of his age).

It also states that Ole A. son of Halvor lives in Norse, TX in 1919 (No dates given of his age)

So… The only thing I have to go on is, Probably safe to say that Canute ? is Jens/Yans, Halvor, Ole and Canute’s father, And I am assuming because of the write-up on Ole above they were from Stavenger.

I believe this family is a family of Early Norwegians with Cleng Peerson and One of the Ole’s and Knute were founders of Norse Settlement in Texas

Julia Canuteson daughter of Jens was born here in LaSalle Co., 1844

What I don’t know is did all Brother’s of Jens come together with parents? Or did they come at separate times? And when?

Also find on Net in various places:
Among the pioneers in Norse was Cleng Peerson. The founder of the community of Norse was Ole Canuteson (Ole Knudsen) from the Stavanger region of Norway.

I found this Obit

CANUTESON, OLE A.--Christine NEAL
Mr. Ole A. Canuteson, who first saw light of day on April 29,1834, near Rochester, New York and who had been slowly declining for the last few years, Quietly passed away on January 16,1920, at the ripe old age of 86 years, 8 months and 18 days. On Sunday afternoon his remains were interred in the Norse Lutheran Cemetery, Rev. J.K. Rystad pronouncing the last sad rites in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Deceased leaves on daughter, four sons, 15 grand children, and four great grand children, besides a host of friends to mourn his loss. Mr. O.A. Canuteson was naturally of a kind hearted, benevolent, modest, and unassuming disposition, an honest, upright and conscientious man; a faithful and devoted husband; a kind father; a fine neighbor and a good man. His parents were among the old pioneers who blazed the way in the wilderness, and came on the sloop, being the first immigrants from Norway who arrived in 1825, settling near Rochester, New York, where the subject was born. His parents and the infant, Ole, soon moved to La Salle County, Illinois, where they helped establish the "Fox River Settlement", the first permanent Norwegian Settlement in America. Mr. O.A. Canuteson and family moved to Bosque County, Texas, in the spring of 1859 and helped establish the Norse Norwegian Settlement. He, thus, endured the drawbacks and hardships of a frontier, pioneer life both in Illinois and Texas. Mr. O.A. Canuteson was a true and conscientious liberal until within two years of his death when he was baptized and, practically, joined the Lutheran Church, evidently for satisfaction and his soul's salvation. Another old pioneer gone to his eternal abode and reward. Peace to his ashes. May his memory ever remain fresh. His surviving children were: Daughter: Cora Olivia Canuteson Aulie; Sons: Halvar, Andrew, Albert L., Alferd Severin; Deceased Children: Daughters: Mary Ann (Anna Marie) Canuteson Christenson, Julie Helen, Elisabeth; Son: Canute; Wives: Ingeborg (1870), Christina (1891), Martha (1919)

Hi.

Found this information about Ole Andreas Canuteson and that his father was Oliver Canuteson (Ole Knudsen), see middle og the page.

Information here tells Oliver Knudsen (Canuteson) came to America and New York 1825.

The Cleng Person party on Sloop Resauration from Stavanger arrived N.Y 1825 with 52 emigrants.
This passenger list from the journey contains only 25 of the names.

Add information about Sloop Restauration.
They arrived N.Y. Oct. 9. with 21 passengers more than the boat was approved for.
The Skipper Peder Eriksen Meland was arrested, the ship seized and they were fined for 3150 Dollar.
By help in USA they send a letter to the authorities with a plea for clemency.
The letter ended up in the US Congress and Nov. 5. they were pardoned by President John Quincy Adams.
See the document almost bottom of the page, including the President´s signature here

Also living in Bosque County TX in the 1860 US Census was Canute Canuteson. Probably the father of one of the Ole's and probably the same Canute Canuteson listed in the 1850 US Census above. The problem here is if he is the father of the Ole born in Norway which seems likely from the 1850 US Census then where is the father of the Ole born in New York. living in 1860.

Name: Canute Canuteson
Age in 1860: 58
Birth Year: abt 1802
Birthplace: Norway
Home in 1860: Bosque, Texas
Gender: Male

In the 1860 US Census at least part of the family has its name spelled as Kannteson. Here is Jens with daughter Julia, probably the famly first referred to in the posters first item. Also the family contains an Ole born about 1847-1848 in Illinois and probably the one married to Anna also listed above.

Name: Jans Kannteson
Age in 1860: 43
Birth Year: abt 1817
Birthplace: Norway
Home in 1860: Mission, LaSalle, Illinois
Gender: Male
Post Office: Mission

Hi

In volume 1 of the Naeseth series Norwegian Immigrants to the United States: A Biographical Directory 1825-1850, the list of Restauration immigrants includes 50 names with added information on page 8 that "All evidence points to the fact that there were three more passengers on board the Restauration. However, Rosdail and others have not determined who they were. Rosdail suggests that two of them may have been a couple, forgotten, who returned to Norway."

The sources for the list of names published in Naeseth are two chiefly:

The Sloopers, Their Ancestry and Posterity by J. Hart Rosdail, published 1961

Utvandrere fra Rogaland published 1942 no author listed

The list of the folks of the Restauration itself has no man of the first name Knut/Knud nor any person whose name is fully identified as Knudson / Knutsen; Knudsdatter etc.

In the book, there is an Andreas Knutson Stangleland (b 1 Sept 1799, Høyland) listed who's arrival year is given as 1824. He did settle first at Kendall NY then moved about 1838-39 to Noble County, Indiana. He married 8 June 1827 to Susan Cary, they had 9 children, no daughter named Julia, and sons named Eleazer, Tollak, Andrew Jackson and Benjamin Franklin.

This volume covers lists dating into 1843. In this volume there are 26 Ole Knudsens, 2 Jens Knudsens, 7 Knud Knudsens, 1 Knut Knutsen, 9 Halvor Knudsen/Knutsen.

Hilsen,
Jackie M

Thank-you to both of you.
Kåre, Information here tells Oliver Knudsen (Canuteson) came to America and New York 1825.

Oliver CANUTESON, one of the first company from Norway to New York, in 1825. Came to Illinois in 1834 - died in 1850. He left two sons and one daughter. One son died in the army in 1863. (Could be Ole, Knute & Margaret)

If you look at 3 names down there is another Oliver KNUTESON came from Norway to New York in 1825, and to Illinois in 1834; died in 1848, leaving four children (Could be Halvor, Ole, Knute and Jens)

If as lyndal40 suggest that Halvor is probably Oliver. Then perhaps the other Oliver (Halvor) who dies in 1848 is Father to the Oliver (Halvor) who died in 1850.

Maybe all the boys took the father’s surname of Canuteson instead of Halvorson. And the assumed father who died in 1848 father’s name Canute.

I don’t have access to the 1840 census in LaSalle Co., IL I know it only list how many and not names other than head of household. But would there be a Halvor (Oliver) Canuteson in 1840?

Would there be exit papers for Halvor Canuteson in 1825 from Stavenger?
