I am trying to gather information on my grandfather's family- Halfdan Amundsen. He was born on January 17, 1893 in Christiania (Oslo) Norway. His father was Hans (Klaus) Amundsen born about 1860 and his mother was Olva Thilesen born about 1858. Hans was born in Odalen (Sondre) and Olva in Romedal, Norway.

Halfdan was in the Merchant Marines and came to the United States to live in 1920. He may have traveled as crew on the ship Toledo Bridge and arrived in New York on May 17, 1920. He married Marget (Margaret) Johannson and lived in Brooklyn, New York for most of his life.

Halfdan Amundsen, his parents and siblings at Dahlsbergstien 8 in 1900.
His fathert was a shoemaker.

Halfdans baptismal record is
#22, I read the birth date as Jan 19 (a note says it should be corrected to Jan 17). The family was living at Wesselsgade 15.

The baptismal record for Olava Tillesdatter is #37, she was born Dec 16 1858 and her parents were Tille Johannesen and Petronille Monsdatter, Brynshagen.

The baptismal record for Hans Amundsen is #230, he was born Nov 6 1859 and his parents were Amund Heningsen, Haugaard and Lisbet Hansdatter.

My two favorites are Norwegian-English Dictionary by Einar Haugen. Very good but only one way.
And
Lingua engelsk-norsk norsk-engelsk.

Haugen can many times be found at a local Barnes and Noble or ordered through them. Lingua and Haugen are available through the St Olaf book store. Click the link.

St. Olaf Bookstore

I also use this dictionary

http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm

or this translation site.

[quote]Do the records go back any further?/quote] - most likely, but parish records require intensive investigations. It will take time.

You are my hero. If you have some time to do the research further back I would greatly appreciate it. I am not in any hurry. You have been able to do a great job so far and I owe you at least a glass of Aass ale.
Thank you again,
Mike
