Looking for my great-grandfather John Bostad, born about 1887 and died in California about 1935. He was booked to board the Titanic to migrate to the United States though New York but his ship from Norway to Liverpool (assumption) was late, thankfully. I don't know how he made it over to the USA by what port to or from, or even where he was born in Norway nor to what parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Michelle

Some more info would be helpful. Occupation, census info from US, etc.

The closest I find is:
John Johnsen, Bolstad, carpenter from Stryn, Sogn og Fjordane, born 1883, emigrated in 1905 (a little too early for Titanic!) to Bristol, S. Dakota.

Michelle -
The Titanic sailed in 1912. Any emigrant applying for US naturalization after 1906 will have filed papers with the government that will answer many of your questions about his Norwegian origins. Seek those out.

Other US records to look for that may give you some of your missing info - application for marriage license, obituary, death certificate.

He was residing in Marysville, Yuba California in the 1930 US census with his wife Verna b. 1899 and twin daughters Verna and May so maybe he came through a port in California instead after having been delayed from Liverpool(assumption). Using ellisisland.org there isn't any John/Johan/Johannes Bolstad immagration in 1912 but one in 1911 born in 1887 but it doesn't allign with the family story. Thanks for the help so far! It is so appreciated!

Hi,
seems like I have searched for a wrong person since two last names appears, Bostad and Bolstad.
I assume Bolstad is the name?

Family stories can also be wrong.

In that 1930 census what year was given for year of immigration? year of naturalization?

When did he marry? When and where were the daughters born? Where was he for the 1920 census?

Kåre - it is BOLSTAD and it seems you might have found him however there is another John Bolstad born abt 1887 who migrated to the USA of which he resided in Wisconsin, USA. I wish I had more information on him.

Hopkins - I do not know when or where he married. My grandmother is still alive so I don't wish to share her full birthday but she was born is Marysville, Yuba, California in 1926 the same residence that lists John in as in the 1930's US census. I am unable to locate John in a 1920's census. He was not married to Verna by 1920 since she was not yet divorced to her first husband a William Hollingsworth considering her last child with that union was born in 1920.

I know that.
I dropped the middlename and farm name (names) with purpose since Johan Olsen was used in the confirmation record, emigration record and the 1906 emigration from Oslo.

Hopkins - Hey! Guess what! I looked in the 1930's census and he immigrated in 1910 and was a working mechanic at a garage. So you were right! The family story is wrong!

Michelle,
previously, you mentioned 1911 as a possibilty. Have you checked the manifest details for that person?

I guess you're talking about this one:
John Bolstad (23) from Norway
Port of Arrival: San Pedro, California
Year of arrival: 1911
Source: California Passenger and Crew Lists, 1893-1957

What's the exact arrival date for this person?

One "Johannes Larsen Bolstad " (25) left Bergen on Nov 6th, 1911, but he was headed for Northwood, North Dakota....
