What routes did emigrants take? What were their basic means of traveling?

Hi,

Until the train was built in 1909 connecting Bergen to Oslo through Hallingdal (Gol) the roadway available into Hallingdal has been described as a two wheel wagon rut. Hiking, skiing and following a water route might also be employed (particularly if frozen as in winter). One young gent cross country skiied from Hol to a southerly port city in a relatively short period of time.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Many thanks. This gives me a clearer picture of traveling conditions. Thanks so much for your time.
