I am searching for emigration date and ship for Ellen Olsen or Ohlsen, born 1862 in Christiansand and emigrated to Minnesota in about 1880, give or take a few years.
She lived in Minnesota for about a year or two, then moved on to Dakota territory, where she was perhaps the first woman to homestead in that territory.
I'm also interested in information about her family. I have one postcard picturing two people, most likely her relatives from back home (both male).

Just wondering, what information you have that says she was born 1862 in Christiansand? It might make it easier to find records, if we have as much info as possible. :-)

Further information on the Beaudet - Olson marriage from Ancestry.com. The only issue I would have is that the orginal document shows Ella Olson as a widow. Complicating things, is Olson her maided name or the name from her first marriage. It does say she was born in Norway and is 42 years old.

Name: Ella Olson
Age: 42
Gender: Female
Spouse: Ed Beaudette
Marriage Date: 21 Oct 1908
Marriage County: Codington
County of Residence: Codington
Post Office: Watertown

I have a copy of her death certificate.
She died and was buried in the town where I was born, in North Dakota.
I'm looking for her ancestors, and siblings, if any, in Norway. We never heard about her life, but I do have that photograph that looks like it was taken in Norway.

No Ellen (or similar) was born in Kristiansand Dec 1862, and no Ellen Olsen/Olsdatter in the 1865 census either.

More research in US is neccessary.

A possibility. Birth-year is off by 1 yr, but place of birth is very close to Kristiansand.
Have you ever seen her with a middle name, middle initial?

Elen Marie Olsen
Birth: 02 DEC 1861
Christening: 10 JAN 1862, Høvåg, Aust-Agder, Norway
Parents: Ole Kristiansen & Inger Aasille Baerntsdr

Census-1865

No proof of emigration found though...

These all look like it could be her, with variations in spelling.
So I need to look for emigration records between 1880 and 1882.
I know that she married in 1884, the year her first child, my grandfather Otto Heinrich Ferdinand Garske, was born. Her homestead was next to that of Charles Garske, and well, they married (and later divorced). The homesteads were in Harding Township, Ramsey County, Dakota = later North Dakota. The census years look correct, because she died in 1928 - I have a copy of her death certificate. It IS possible that she came from a place near Christiansand. So, any emigration of someone her age from that area between 1880 and 1882 is where I need to look to find her.
With that in mind, how would I find a set of passenger lists that stopped there during that timeframe?
Sincerely,
Edith

Well, this is a possibility... many people's ages were off by a year or more in various census data, so this is a thought.
I have never seen a second name, so I'm going to see if I can get a copy of the wedding entry at Devils Lake, to see what is on there, if anything. I also know that she divorced Charles Garske, so perhaps there is some information on the divorce record, if not on the marriage record.
Sincerely,
Edith

The photo I have of a man and two sons doesn't have any names on it, but the census does show that Elen or Ellen had two brothers.... so it would be interesting to find out what happened to these people - if that Elen Marie remained in the community, then she's not the right person...
Sincerely,
Edith

Maybe Christiansund was read as Christiansand, among the emigrants from Christiansund is Elen Olsdatter Lenæs, see #187, she is listed as "G" - married, but in the parish record she is posted as "Pige" and was given an attestation accordingly, see #8.
She is listed with her parents and siblings in 1865. Elen was born Nov 5 1863, her baptismal record is #147.

If you could find a copy of their marriage certificate, that could be of great value. Perhaps her father's name are listed.

Looking at the Norwegian emigration records, this Elen Olsdatter Lenæs is actually the only woman that fits all the criterias. But isn't she married to Anders Johnsen Lenæs?
