I am trying to research my grandfather's, Oskar Vilhelm Kulsud, family. Oskar was born in 1891 in Gjerdrum, Akershus, Norway and emigrated to the US in 1907, settling in the Austin, MN area. I know most of his siblings but run into dead ends with his parentage. Everything my mother told me has been forgotten. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

On the Kulsrud farm in Gjerdrum, Akershus for the 1900 Norwegian census --
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1900&knr=0234&kenr=003&bnr=0060&lnr=00

That website for searching various Norwegian censuses comes with its own instructions on the site -
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1900&knr=0234&kenr=003&bnr=0060&lnr=00

The database wildcard for that website is "%".

Did you start to search the parish records for Gjerdrum which are at the Digitalarkivet website?

Lina Olavas sister, Anne Maria, was born Sept 27 and baptized Oct 16 1842, see #41. The parents were not married at that time.
They were married Oct 18 1853, see #13. Jacob was then a Huusmand at Flatner-eie, Elen Marie was at Gouterud.

Jacob was born July 27 1816 at Enger-eie in Skedsmo, see #48. His parents were Haagen Nielsen and Maren Larsdatter.

Elen Marie was born July 6 1820, see #17. Her parents were Ole Augustenusen and Olea Larsdatter, Smedstuen.

There are a number of helpful translating websites and lists of most useful words. Check under "Links" above right on this page and keep the following website URL handy.
http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm

It takes practice to get proficient with the Digitalarkivet. But all the info is provided FREE so well worth the work.

I really would like to go as far back as is possible on both the Kulsrud and Rogne families; I am doing this for my two children. All but two of my mother's generation are gone and the two that remain really do not know much about their parents' backgrounds which makes it difficult to delve deeper into what I know. I have heard stories, like the Rognes running the phone company--not sure if that is true or not! Anyway, I appreciate any information that you can give me. I can't thank you enough for what you have shared thus far!

I've done some corrections in my posting of 21/04/2011.

Jacob Haagensens parents Haagen Nielsen and Maren Larsdatter were married Dec 27 1807, see #5 on right page.
Haagen Nielsen died March 21 1846, 66 years old, see #17.

Ole Augustinusen was baptized Oct 24 1784, see #31. His father was Augustinus Kulsrud and the mother was Eli.

Ole Augustinusen and his sister Dorthe Augustinusdatter were both servants at Kulsrud in 1801.

A daughter of Olaus Karlsen, Kulsrud and Lina Olava Jakobsdatter was not in the 1900 census, here are the children with birth dates:
Mathilde Josephine Olausdatter 1884.07.11
Anna Lovise Olausdatter 1886.06.26
Karl Jakob Olausen 1889.03.23
Oskar Vilhelm Olausen 1891.06.03
Kristian Augustinus Olausen 1895.04.23
Dagny Marie Olausdatter 1898.09.03
Sigurd Adolf Olausen 1900.10.09

Anna Lovise most likely died before 1900, but have not found the record.

Thank you for all the info today! I had the names of my grandfather's siblings from his obituary, but not their birthdates. It is rewarding to fill in such information and find out more. I think Mathilde, Karl, Oskar and Dagny all emigrated to the US and everyone but Karl ended up in the Austin, MN area. Karl settled in the Virginia area and worked in DC. I am not sure Anna died because I think my mother met her when visiting Norway in 1986. There also should be a sister Amalie (sp?). I have some photos but my mother never wrote who was who and it left her when she died in 1989. It makes me sad to know how much has been forgotten!

One Anna Olausdatter was working as a servant at Kogstad in 1900 - it might be Anna Lovise.

There is 4 or 5 Kulsrud farms in Gjerdrum today, which is the one of interest to you is most likely the marked one. Use zooming etc. for further searching.

Oskars emigration in 1907.
He travelled together with Karl.
Records showing Karl and Oskar getting attestation when moving out of Gjerdrum in 1907, see #1 & 7.
Mathilde left Gjerdrum in 1910, see #6.
Dagny left in 1916, see #1.
Kristian moved to Christiania (Oslo), see #1 in 1918. (he actually moved in 1816).

Amalie Konstanse was born May 25 1906, see #8.

Anna used the last name Kulsrud in 1910. She was a servant with architect Meyer.
