In this death record and the 1900 census this man Kristoffer Olson Lĝbben is listed as being "veivogter" Not sure of spelling and would like to know what this occupation is:

Maybe it would be of interest to know the work a veivogter was engaged in. The responsibility of a veivogter was to inspect the conditions of roads in his area and make certain that necessary maintenance was performed. (Unfortunately no veivogters exist for maintenance of roads today.)
In the 1865 census Kristofer Olsen is called a vei-opsynsmand = roads caretaker.

I have a Lobben story to share.

I worked with two Lobben boys from Modum some years ago.
Both were calm, skilled and very strong.
The oldest of them is the strongest man I´ve ever met at work.

Add info: Kristoffer Lobben died of cancer, he lived on Sollihĝgda

Hi,

Thanks for the extra bits of information, your kindness including them is appreciated.

Kristoffer's wife Larine Knutsdatter 1832-1915 is the younger sister of my great great grandmother Karen Knutsdatter 1830-1891. Larine's and Kristoffer's son Ole was also a veivogter, so appreciate the explanation.

I'm not sure what the U.S. equivalent of the position would be, road overseer? or road maintainer? road master? You see local folks hired to "drag" the roads in their area mentioned in township records in the days of dirt or gravelled roads. Yes, Spring is definitely pothole season here, too.

Thanks to Einar also and thanks again...

Jackie M.

No, not surveyor. Road maintenance is not surveying.
