Landmark is a farm in Nordre Aurdal, Oppland, same area as the Fossebraten farm. Several people from the farm emigrated to the US.

From Norwegians in Pope County, MN:
Other Valdres families which deserve mention and were early pioneers in the area were the Aabergs and the Landmarks. T. A. Disrud of Glenwood remembers Anton Aaberg as a man of superior strength and a master at doing the "halling kast." The Landmarks came to Hoff township in quite a number. Gulbran G. Landmark arrived there in 1881. His brothers and sisters who came at about the same time were Nels and Martin Landmark, Mrs. Sam Olson, Mrs. Nils Lien of Langhei, and Mrs. Andrew Anderson of Cyrus. Other Landmarks also came to America but eventually went to other areas of the country. Gulbrand was known for his violin playing.

Wonderful information. I met Mrs. Landmark that raised Beatrice but do not remember her first name. I will have to ask Beatrice.

I am looking forward to the 1940 US census being released in 2012, with hopes of finding more information about where my aunts and uncles were raised. 1930 census shows all children of my grandmother Ragnhild except for my mother Annette, who had married my father in 1929, were still living with Dedrick in 1930 and his new wife Lilian in Minneapolis. (My grandmother died young in 03/1927, and Dedrick married Lilian in 02/1928). Those children would be: Gustave, Dena, Herbert, Evelyn, Jordis, and Beatrice. Evelyn and Jordis both had congenital hip disease and Beatrice, the youngest, was just a toddler, having survived a 1 and a half pound premature weight at birth. Not sure yet who raised the children. Gus may have gone out on his own, Herb went to an uncle's farm in western Minnesota. Maybe I can get some details from my cousins. Wish I had learned more while my aunts and uncles were still living. Will have to do some research.

My heartfelt condolences to all Norwegians, and especially you, my new-found family and friends, in the heinous assault on Norway. Even in your country that works so diligently to treat all people with dignity and respect and to set the example for peace, disturbed minds seek to promote their individual agendae with wanton acts of cruelty and violence. May you find comfort in shared faith and hope for the future.

Hi Rosemary, Didrick is my great uncle and I vaguely remember him. A lot of the names have been Anglicized as Didrick's grandfather and my great grandfather is Andreas not Andrew. And the name Garlie is correct instead of Karie. There are many of our ancestors of both Maanum's and Garlie's buried in the West Zion Lutheran Church cemetery in Hancock, Minnesota. Andreas and Andrea are there as well as my Grandfather Anton (not Anthony) and his wife Clara. My son, Kristofer, has done a lot of genealogy research and may have some info you may be interested in. The old homestead is in Leira, Norway in the Valdres valley about 120 mi. north of Oslo. Good luck in your search. Best, Dana Maanum

Hello, Dana. How nice to hear from you! Just now seeing your post as my husband has been in cancer treatment since last summer, but has finished and is doing well. I would enjoy further contact with you and with your son Kristofer. I am hungry for more knowledge of my family. I do not do Facebook but my email address is rosemarymanley@yahoo.com and my cell phone no. is 469-693-0067.

I continue to try to find the marriage record for my grandfather Dedrik A Maanum and grandmother Raghhild Fossebraten. She emigrated to US in 1904 bound for Minneapolis to her uncle Ole Nilsen and my mother Annetta was their first child born in Napoleon ND on 6/28/1908. I have their wedding portrait and the photoghapher locaton says Springfield O. But I cannot imagine them being in Ohio at all, as Ohio never has been part of any family lore, let alone being married there. So I cannot explain that on the photo. However, I would suspect they were married somewhere Minnesota or possible North Dakota, sometime between 1904 and 1907. Can anyone help me find their marriage record, please, possibly around Hancock MN?

There is a database of Minnesota photographers at www.mnhs.org you might look for the photographer. There is also a Springfield, Minnesota in Brown County.
