Hallo Alf -
Thank you for the contact - this is exciting news! I must admit that I had stopped looking into this at the time of the (previous) last entry, because it appeared that all available information had been found.
I did learn a few more things, but I've replaced the computer with all the Oskar notes and haven't transferred them to this PC yet.
I did find the name of the ship Oskar was a sailor on, and am convinced that he did jump overboard and swim to North Carolina. I kept trying to find a local sheriff or police report, or a newspaper article about a Norwegian sailor being found, but later realized that he was trying not to be found - as he would probably just be arrested and returned.
I also found out from my father that his new initial F. stood for Francis, which he added when he became a Catholic. I'm guessing that was under the influence of one of his wives - perhaps even a precondition to marriage.
Reading through all this again, I'm wondering if I should see if I can find anything else for his baker father, but perhaps that was a dead end in the records. Also, his later family likely doesn't know that he was a father of a child out of wedlock (maybe he didn't know !), and has no interest in learning this now.
Hope to hear from you again.

One of my open questions was where and when Oskar had his art training, and perhaps the best answer so far is from a "community magazine" from Charlottesville, Virginia, where he lived in his house Pantops c. 1942-1971, when he died. Source: http://tinyurl.com/ktazdyp
"Hansen told the reporter that he had developed a passion for sculpture while he was at sea. He visited Italy on his many travels and began learning the craft when the ship’s carpenter adapted his tools and obtained some marble that the two of them began to carve. Hansen also claimed to have studied with famed sculptor August Rodin in Paris."
I don't buy the Rodin part. Oskar also took some classes at Chicago's Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art in the 1920's. See:

This thread has been inactive for a number of years, but I'm hopeful there might still be some members of the forum who can help.
Charles Hansen (Oskar's grandson) who started this research thread passed away last year in early 2020.
Since then, I've connected with Oskar's one remaining son, Alex Hansen, and I'm in the process of starting an Oskar JW Hansen Archive (https://oskarjwhansen.org/) and working with the Hansen family to write a biography about Oskar's fascinating life.
If anyone on the forum has any additional Oskar-related stories or information (or would like to help with my research—especially with Norwegian-language research) I would really appreciate it!
