We will be visiting Norway in August and I would really like to find the farms that my ancestors came from or at least the area that they came from. This is the information that I know.

My great great grandfather was Christian Peterson Marindahl. He was born at Baadshaugen, Norway Oct. 3 1816. He married Elie Svensdatter. He emmigrated to Wisconsin, then Yankton, South Dakota, then back to Norway. Elie was born at Overlien Norway possibly November 22, 1803.

My husband found this information. The Baadshaugen Farm may be Farm Number 503 Skriverhaug. The Mariendal Farm is Farm Number 503 listed on page 42 of the book Norske Gaardnavne, Volume 3 By Oluf Rygh Published 1900

http://www.dokpro.uio.no/rygh_ng/rygh_form.html

I am wondeirng if these are easy to find and also if there might be any relatives in the areas (Peterson). I think these are near Ringsaker. Is there a google map that may show where the farm is?

Thanks

Joan Kub

Thanks so much. Do you know which church they would have gone to and where it would have been located. I would also like to visit it and the cemetery. Do you know if any Peterson's are still living on the farm? I appreciate all of the help you have provided.

Ringsaker church situated on the pilgrim road between Oslo and Trondheim. It is a very old church. The situation in relation to Botshaugen shown on this map.
(Zoom and move to your liking)
If you will be traveling by car the map can also be used to find routes, distance and expected time.

The people living on that farm in the 1865 Norwegian census -
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0412&kenr=018&bnr=0050&lnr=000

The 1900 Norwegian census -
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=27&filnamn=f00412&gardpostnr=1659&sokefelt=skjul

This 1900 census shows that no one living on that farm was born in that district.

You realize of course that just being named Peterson/Petersen/Pedersen/etc. does NOT mean that you are a relative of anyone of a "like" name still in the Ringsaker area. Traditional Norwegian naming was the patronymic naming system as you can see demonstrated in the two census enumerations above.

Online study material to learn about traditional Norwegian naming practices and patterns.
