My great grand-mother was widowed with four children under the age of 12. She was institutionalized with what we now believe was post-partum depression. I have very little information on her other than what is listed on her marriage license. Her Marriage license, dated 4th of May, 1881 in Cook County Illinois lists her father's name as Hans Nilsen and her mother as Ann or Anne Karine Andersdotter. She was to be 21 on her next birthday, so her birthdate should be between May 5, 1859 and May 4, 1860. The place of birth is listed as Drammen, Norway. I have found several Caroline's born in the time frame, but none to these parents. I have wondered if she lied about her age in order to marry; if so, she may have been born up to 1862 or so.

I assumed she emigrated not long before she married, so I have only searched ships records for 1878-1880. While I found some listings, none give clues to her family of origin, which is what I would really like.

I realize this is scant information. Any help you can give to find Caroline's family of origin would be appreciated. She died after a decade in the asylum to which she was sent when her husband died and her children were split up and adopted out. Her health improved eventually, but by the time she would have been able to go home, there was no home to go to. I would like to honor this woman by trying to reconnect her with some family. Thank you for your help.

Hi Julie,

When you searched for Caroline were you searching for Caroline Nilsen or Caroline Hansdatter?

I usually searched as it was written, Caroline Nilsen, but have tried variations on Hansdr, Hansdotter. 3/4 of my ancestors are Swedish, so I tend to use the Swedish spellings.

The baptismal record for Caroline is #41. She was born April 1861, and baptized at Hof in Vestfold. Her father Hans Nielsen was then a road worker.

Carolines parents and siblings in 1865.

Hi,

Apparently Hans, Anne Karine, & Caroline moved in 1876 to Tangen in _____ (Drammen?), #5, #6, #7:

Source information: Vestfold county, Hof, Parish register (official) nr. 6 (1851-1877), Migration records 1867-1876, page 457.

In 1900 she was Caroline Reisted in Kankakee, Illinois, in the Illinois Eastern Hospital for the Insane. (Line 38) [I don't know how to post a link yet] She died in either 1902 or 1903 or 1923. The handwriting is unclear.

I would love to know if her parents or siblings emigrated. It would be courageous of her to come alone. Her husband might have sent for her, since they lived in the same general area and may have known each other.

Karoline Nilsen (= Caroline Hansdatter) moved out from Tangen, with the intention to go to Chicago, in March 1881, see #5.

She left Kristiania (Oslo) April 1 that year with a prepaid ticket. She travelled with Gustavs brother Martin, see line above Karoline Nils..

... and married Gustav in Chicago on the 4th of May. He must have sent for her.
