Hello,
I am new to this forum, and signed up due to a trunk my husband and I recently acquired.
There is a sticker on the trunk which reads, "S.S. Hellig Olav." There are other stickers on the trunk as well, and a name and address painted on the front.
After putting the name of the ship in a search engine, this is the first site that popped up. It was cool seeing a photograph of the ship!
My question is, does anyone know who Ingeborg Engen is, and how I might find out when she traveled to the U.S. from Norway onboard the S.S. Hellig Olav? There is a metal tag on the truck with a date of December 22 stamped on it, but no year. Ingeborg's destination was Duluth, "Minnisota."
Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you! |

Ingeborg Engen (25) from Dovre, Norway arrived New York on the SS Hellig Olav on Oct 30, 1906. Her destination was Duluth, MN. She states that she has lived in the US before, in Tracy, MN (1900-1906(?))

This website indicates that Hellig Olav's route in 1906 took it to the port of New York.
The Ellis Island website lists Ingeborg Engen as arriving 30 Oct 1906, born 1881, previous residence in Dovre [Lesja, Oppland, Norway], final intended destination Duluth, Minn., going to join friend Louis Anderson of 109 W. 7th St. in Duluth.
The same young woman listed immediately below her in the Oslo register is listed here too as going to join brother-in-law Louis Anderson of Duluth. |

Did she return again for a 2nd time? Although birthyear is slightly off (21.09.1881 vs 23.09.1882), I believe this could be the same woman in census-1910 for Dovre.

Is it possible that she married in 1913. Could someone with a better eye than mine take a look and see if the bride in the second couple is Ingeborg Jørgensdatter Engen. Unfortunately all of the usual data such as birth years and parents names has been left off of this record for this couple.

Hi,
Again a lack of full info but this may the bridegroom of the above marriage at DIS Gravminner:
612075 Hans Voldengen Antonsen 2304 1937 57 8 14-1 Nordre gravlund Oslo
Take a close look at the marriage record. It's numerical sequence # is 0 and the note in the far right column says "Viet i Lillehammer"

Hans Antonsen, Voldengen and Ingeborg Jørgensdatter, Engen were married in Lillehammer, the normal info on birth year and the fathers are available at #1 in 1913.

I believe the Louis Anderson of Duluth you are referring to was my mother's grandfather. |

Hi LKSlette, the Louis Anderson mentioned is listed in this 1910 census record, which can help you decide if he's your Louis.

Thank you Jane! Being a newbie on this forum, I'm not sure how to reach out to previous posters.
My mother is soon to be 93 years old and I am hoping to make a connection .
