Im looking for any information about my grandfather Hans, or the Lindstrøm line. His fathers name was Jens, and my great grandmother was related to Roald Amundsen the famous explorer. my grandfather came to canada on a waling ship in the early 1900's and we lost our Norwegian name to Jensen for the sake of the government, if anybody has any info that would be great :)

Hi,

It appears that what your ancestor did was "retool" the name, rather than change the name he had (of course, if he is the son in the family in the Jens Jenson Lindstrøm in 1900 Norwegian census below) :

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=5&filnamn=f00301&gardpostnr=5652&personpostnr=148534&merk=148534#ovre

And here is that same family in the 1910 census:

If the Hans Lindstrom arriving in 1927 is your Hans Linsdstrom, here is a photo of the boat he arrived on, the Montnairn. It looks more like a passenger vessel than a whaling ship so I hope I have the right Hans Lindstrom.

Hi,

Here is the headstone of your great grandmother, Hans' mother:

When you get to the point of searching for the connection to Roald Amundson you might want to do a forum search here at norwayheritage. Many families have this story of a connection in their lore and have explored it here.

Hans parents were married in Grønland church Dec 9 1888, see #102.
Jens Jensens (Lindstrøm) father was Hans Jensen and Inger Marie Amundsens father is listed as Ingebret Andersen?

Inger Marie was baptized June 5 1865, see #37 - her father Engebret Amundsen and her mother Anne Amundsdatter.

Inger Maries parents and siblings in 1865.

Hi,

This may be Anne Amundsdatter's baptism in Norderhov #57:

Source information: Buskerud county, Norderhov, Parish register copy nr. I 2 (1814-1867), Birth and baptism records 1819, page 138-139.

Jens jensen Lindstrøm was my great grandfather, t he information you got here is mostly correct. I have his wifes history way back and I have never heard or seen anything about her beeing related to Roald Amundsen. I would have known if that was a fact. You are welcome send me a mail if you want to know more about our family . Britt

Roald Amundson as a relative or ancestor is a common family tale in US and elsewhere.

Too bad that the original poster appears to have never come back to let us know if her Hans is the Hans we found....

"No smoke without fire" as we say in Norway.
There are "often" inquires from people in America and Australia who have heard that they are related to the explorer Roald Amundsen.
Most likely some are since there are more persons of Norwegian origin in America than in Norway. There are ca 7000 with surname Amundsen in Norway today, the vast majority are not related to each other.
