Andrew O. Moe served two terms.
First in the Wis 15th co C and E.
Then as a substitute in Wis 7th Co G.

I've tracked him first thru the 1890 Vet Sched (in Hayfield, Dodge, MN) and then the Civil War Pension Record (died 1921 in North Dakota) Both these sources list what Regiment and company they were in so sure it's the guy I'm interested in)

I have not been able to locate him in 1860 o 1870 census or a marriage record. Or get back to Norway.

One civil war record has an alias for him as Ambrea and the 1885 Minn census seems to have Andrias.

The 1900 census indicate his marriage was abt 1869 and likely Wisconsin. According to later census he only had one marriage. Census also indicated he came to US around 1853-1854.

The Norwegians in the Civil war Vesterheim did have a paragraph on him also.

Any additional information would be appreciated.

Andrew's residence in the Civil War records for 1861 was Madison (Dane cty), Wis.

Could this be him in Census-1860 for Windsor, Dane, Wisconsin:
Christian Oleson m 37 Norway
Elizabeth Oleson f 25 Norway
Betsey Oleson f 3 Wisconsin
Silene Oleson f 1 Wisconsin
Betsey Oleson f 61 Norway
James Newton m 12 Norway
Edward Jacobson m 23 Norway
Andrew Oleson m 24 Norway
Andrew Johnson m 20 Norway
Peter Oleson m 20 Norway
Julia A. Johnson f 22 Norway

Looking at the Oleson's in the household:
Betsey Oleson f 61 Norway
Christian Oleson m 37 Norway
Andrew Oleson m 24 Norway
Peter Oleson m 20 Norway

Could Betsey be his widowed mother, and Christian and Peter be his brothers?
Since also Betsey is named Oleson, it could be her late husband's (their fathers) patronymic.

Have you checked the 1870-census for Vernon, Dodge, Minnesota?
It contain an Andrew Oleson born about 1835 in Norway. Who else is in his household?
Wife Mathia/Martha/Mary born ab. 1847 in Norway and daughter Bertha M born ab. 1870 in Wisconsin?
The census for Vernon also contain a Betsey Oleson born about 1801 in Norway. Is she listed in the same household? Could it be his mother?

Jan Peter

The 1870 census looks spot on. I had been looking in Wisconsin because the 1885 MN census listed a daughter born in 1875 in Wisc . So again, thanks for the extra eyes.

The 1860 census looks very good! I had seen on in Blue Mound which seemed off. Listed a different wife and didn't seem like a good fit. I agree the Olsen/Olesen seems like a natural fit. That combined with the 1870 census and Betsey seems very strong case!

Thanks!!!!

sorry, I misread your earlier post to say the 1870 did contain a wife martha and daughter bertha.
The citty location worked so well with the 1880 and 1885 census.

The record has..
The Oleson, Andrew 35 M W Farmer
Elizabeth 35 F W Keeping house Norway
Alice 4 F W MINN
Minnie 2 F W MINN
Holden 3/12 M W MINN

Back to the 1880 census, the children born between 1870-1874 were listed as WIsconson
The child born in 1877 as Iowa.

Hmmm... he does looks not to be a good match for Andrew in the 1870-census then.

What about Betsey Oleson, born 1801 in Norway.
Who is she living with in the 1870-census for Vernon, Dodge, Minnesota?

Looks like Betsy Erickson in Pleasant Springs, Dane, Wisconsin, census-1900. Born Mar 1800 in Norway.
But; Imigration year listed as 1867..., thus not a good lead. She should have imigrated about 1854...

- a candidate could be Anders Olsen, born at Wærnesmoen (= Moe?) Oct 20 1849, see #302. He was born out of wedlock, father Ole Nilsen, Graabræk and mother Karen Eriksdatter, Wærnesmoen.

Confirmation record for Anders Olsen Præstmo, #12.

He was a servant at Præstemoe 1865.
