Hi Laurie Jean

Are you looking for living relatives in Norway, or in the US, or both?

Do you have any birth dates for any of the mentioned people, and any date of emigration?

There is a Marie Johansen in the Ellis Island lists. The ship of travel was the Hellig Olav, departed from Kristiania, Akerhus, Norway. Arrival date was May 29 1912. She was 18, single and from Lillehammer, Norway.

I suppose this is your family in the 1900 cencus of Norway. As uou can see they are not from Lillehammer, but from Fåberg outside. But, as most people 1850-early 1900s they moved to the city - either the closest one (as in this case).

Brother Ingvald probably was this servant at a closeby farm:

Unfortunately neither Johan nor Kristine lived at the same farm in 1865. And there are two Johan Kristiansens at the right age in Fåberg in the 1865 cencus so I can't tell which one's the right. But maybe someone with (access to) a "bygdebok" at Digitalarkivet can help you...?

I Just wanted to thank everyone who is tring to help me.
There is no words that can express this great feeling to
have the loved ones that my grandmother Marie talked about. I only wish I would have listened to my elders when I was young.
Thanks again!

Hi,
could this be his cousin Otto? Click here.

No birthplace is given, but according to the same census at Digitalarkivet, he is born in Norway.

Hi,
this Marie Johansen (arrival date May 29, 1912) which Elaine found in post #3 is the correct one! And there is a ship manifest there, at the Ellis Island database! The manifest says her father is Joh. Kristiansen. Marie is 5ft 8in, fair-haired and blue eyes...
Birthplace says Faaberg.

The manifest also says Marie is going to visit her sister Clara Knutson! Her sister [Clara] paid her ticket.
Here is Marie on the list of emigrants from Oslo.

I believe she might be travelling together with passenger #20, Anna Olsen. She has been home on a visit, is 18 years old, and a non-immigrant (already lives in "Wakonda, South Dakota").
But what is interesting is that her father is from Lillehammer, his name is Iver Olsen. Anna Olsen is going to her sister Marie Maar??.

I have sent you a copy of the manifest, Laurie!
The manifest says something about the place where Clara Olson lives, I believe it says some place in Minnesota.

So this must be Marie Johansen in the 1900 census.
This must be her sister Klara leaving Oslo on April 10. 1908. This Klara is born on Nov. 28. 1886 in Faaberg.

And where is Johan Kristiansen in the earlier censuses?
In 1875, it must be either him or him.
And Kristine Kristiansdatter?
You have 2 choices here as well, either she or she.

To get the proof, I believe you'll have to check the microfiche for Faaberg parish, either to find them married, or to see what it says at the time of christening for Klara or Marie...
Maybe someone who have the churchbooks on microfiche could look up Klara Johansdatter, born on Nov. 28. 1886 in Faaberg parish...?
I believe Johan and Kristine got married around 1880-1885...?

Hi,
I found some more info when I looked at the manifest for Klara Johansen at the Ellis Island database (Apr 22nd, 1908).

The manifest says Klara is going to her sister "Mrs. Pauline Brein" in North Dakota. The place is called Orn/Osn or something... Klara paid her ticket herself.

Here is Pauline Brein (married, 22 years old) going to North Dakota on Mar. 23rd, 1906 , together with her (assumed) children Leif Konrad (2 years) and Jenny Kristine (8 months).
They arrived on Apr. 3rd, 1906 on the ship "Hellig Olav".
The manifest states that ticket is paid by her husband, and it's also the husband she is going to, "Mr. Simen Brein". The place says something about Grand Forks, North Dak.

Simen Brein (30y) from "Lillihammer" arrived on June 26, 1905 with the ship "united states", sailing from Kristiania, Norway, according to Ellis Island. Simen paid his ticket himself, and was going to visit a friend, one "Mr. Ole Fakstad(?)", North Dak. This must be Simen in Digitalarkivet.

So to summarize:
  • Simen Brein went to North Dakota. in June 1905 to visit a friend.
  • Pauline Brein w/2 children went the year after, in Mars 1906, to visit Simen (husband).
  • Klara Johansen went in April 1908 to visit Pauline (sister).
  • Marie Johansen went in May 1912 to visit Klara (sister).
