I am a Researcher at the University of Bristol, working on a major research project with the ss Great Britain Trust (see <http://www.ssgreatbritain.org/>).

I am trying to discover if any Norwegian passengers travelled on the ss Great Britain (1852 to 1888) from Liverpool to Australia and would like to hear from anyone descended from those passengers, or from any archives, libraries, or local history societies who might have material relating to passengers who travelled on this ship.

I can be contacted at hicjc@bristol.ac.uk

Thank you!

Ancestry.com can be searched for passenger on this ship during this time frame. The site lists over 12, 000 passengers. Unfortunately for passengers whose nationality was NOT Scottish, English or Irish the Nationality is listed as "Othe Parts" of which there were 308 and "Foreigner" of which there were 184. Thus it is hard to tell how many of those might have been Norwegian. However I did search for Ole and came up empty handed which would indicate that there were only a small number of Scandinavians.

I don't know if it is of interest, but I thought I should mention that
It is quite easy to search the Norwegian emigration databases in www.digitalarkivet.no
For people with specific destinations, "Australia", "Queensland", "New Zealand"...

It should also be noted that the Norwegians those data sometimes spelt names totalt
Phonetic, which may confuse researchers today.
(i e. Queensland became "Kvinsland"..)

I would try asking a person from Australia or New Zealand from this site. Maybe try Nearnorsewoods on here. She might be able to help you or steer you in the right direction.

Good luck!
