this was written by Mary Goldban, my 2nd Greatgrandmother.

I was born near Christianian (KRISTIANSAND) Norway July 8, 1841. My father Olof Goldban in company with Capt Dirkwood were large owners Ships that sailed all over the world-Fathers health was failing, so Dr said take a sea voyage. In my fathers ship were 7 weeks giting to New York. He said go to country and you will get strong. We traveled to Milwaukee Wis and to Port Washington where my dear Father died. Graduated from the Shiboygan High School in Chicago.

Can anyone help find Olof?

Olof Goldban could be Ole/Olaf Guldbrandsen in Norway.

Census-1860 shows Mary Goldban (18) in Sheboygan, Wisconsin

A possibility:
Marit Olsdatter
Birth: 08 Jul 1841, Christening: 08 Aug 1841
Parents: Ole Gulbrandsen & Guri Nielsdr
Source: Oppland county, Slidre, Lomen, Røn in Slidre, Parish register (official) nr. 3 (1831-1843), Birth and baptism records 1841, page 74.

This is not near Christianian (KRISTIANSAND), but Oppland county was at that time called Christians Amt.

Is this her?

Emigration to America on March 29th, 1850:
#101, Ole Gulbrandsen Vidste Rogndokken born 21 Jan 1792
#102, wife Guri Nilsdatter, 53 y.o.
#103, Ingeborg Olsdatter, 25 y.o.
#104, Ole Olsen, born 16 Aug 1829
#105, Niels Olsen, born 03 Jun 1835
#106, Sigrid Olsdatter, born 18 Jan 1838
#107, Marit Olsdatter, born 08 Jul 1841
#108, Ingeborg Olsdatter, born 17 May 1844
Source: Oppland county, Vestre Slidre, Parish register (official) nr. 1 (1844-1855), Migration records 1850-1853, page 226.

Coming from this mountain region of Norway (Valdres), Ole Gulbrandsen was for sure no shipowner, but I still believe it's a great chance that this Marit Olsdatter is your Mary Goldban.

The farm Rogndokken is today spelled Raundokken.

Thanks, I strongly believe it's her.

They emigrated on the Brig Nordlyset, leaving Bergen on May 8th, 1850, arriving New York on July 11th.
Captain was Niels N. Fisher

Here is an reference to Ole Gulbrandsen of Wisconsin. Maybe someone who has access to this book can see what if any information is available in the book Jackie?

There are many nice sets of searchable records at the Rock County page of www.usgenweb.com:

www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wirock/" target="_blank">http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wirock/

Since (or if) they left in 1850 the family may have been treated in Naeseth's Biographical Directory.

This might be Julia (Guri) in 1870. The family she is living with is headed by Jacob Anderson whose occupation is listed as Sea Captain.

I think Jacob Anderson is the head of the same family Mary Goldban lived with in the 1860 census...

Jacob Anderson's wife is "Sarah Anderson".
I believe she could be Sigrid Olsdatter, born 18 Jan 1838.

Here is an interesting group from the 1860 US Census. Perhaps, Ole is already dead and Guri Nelson is Guri Nilsdatter. If so she is living with her son Nels Olson and his wife. Also living with them is Ingeborg the youngest daughter born in Norway.
