Hi All, Just wanted to share with you, that I visited Ellis Island last Saturday and for those of you that have ancestors that came through there, it is really a must see. Not only did they have to experience harsh conditions on their voyage to the U.S., but once they got to Ellis Island they had to go through medical and psychological exams. If they didn't pass, they could be sent home. I heard one story of a large family that came over with their elderly mother. The mother had something wrong with her and they sent her home, even though all of her family had been allowed in the U.S. They never saw her again. If you're thinking about a vacation, consider Ellis Island. It's well worth the trip!
Also, wanted to share with you that Little Norway in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, may be closing, because of lack of funds. This site houses Norwegian artifacts and has been used as a classroom for teaching visitors about early Norwegian settlers. Please read this article if you are interested. http://www.channel3000.com/entertainment/Future-of-Little-Norway-is-in-doubt/-/1628/13390026/-/12st9ts/-/index.html

Hi. An interesting film Wanda. I hope they will manage to keep Little Norway as it is for future generations.

Hei Kċre, Yes, it is a very important part of our ancestors Norwegian-American experience and I hope they can keep it open. I'm going to take my family there this summer and I encourage others to do so, if interested.
Take care, Wanda |
