I am looking for any information on my great great grandparents John Peter Toyra and Maria Allati. They had a daughter Greta (Gertie) Johanna Toyra about 1868 in Norway. In a 1900 USA censis it says that Gertie's parents were born in Norway. We don't have any other information about them. Thank You, Julie Harris |

Norway was under Swedish government in 1889, so it's not completely wrong to say that they were swedish at that time....

Johan Peter and his family are born in or around Alta, Finnmark, Norway, so you should consider them as Norwegians. But if they are Kven people, they must have Finnish heritage. Maybe Johan Peter's g.father was a Finnish immigrant to Alta? It's not only the Norwegians and Sami people that reside in Finnmark. At the end of the 1800s there was a large immigration of Finns (or Kven as they were called). Famine in the inner lands of todays Finland resulted in the migration to the coast at the fish-rich Barents Sea. The kven people retained their language and traditions. There are still people in Finnmark that are Kven native speakers. Many Kvens spoke only the kven language, but the census shows that there are Kven people that can only understand and write Norwegian. Would you know the mother language Gertie spoke?

Jan Peter, I have an Aunt who is 94 years old who would have known her Grandmother Gertie. I am going to ask her if she remembers what language she spoke. Thank you for all the information and I will let you know what I find out about the language. I am going to try to find out who Hendrich Pedersen's parents were and so on to see where they come from. Thank you again, Julie Harris |
