I'm trying to find a link between a known Sea Captain in England that has the same name as my Great Grandfather, a Sea Captain that lived out the latter half of this life in Singapore.
Capt Robert Samuel Robertson had my Grandmother to his wife Nellie Kim in 1917 in Singapore. He died at age 66 (according to the Strait Times) in 1923. He is listed as "Scotchman" on my Grandmothers birth certificate
I have recently heard of a Capt Robert Samuel Robertson born in 1859 in London (to a Scottish Father), who apparently took up with a Chinese lady later in life... so he fits the profile.
What I cannot find is any record of which ship Robert sailed on, or if there, by coincidence, may be more than one Robert Samuel Robertsons that were Master Mariners, about the same age, active at the same time.
Is there any way of confirming a particular captain was in port in Singapore and made residence there? I even have an address he lived at in Singapore if it helps?
I have found a story in the Strait Times of a Capt Robertson arriving in Singapore aboard the SS Mongolia in May 1905, earlier in the year his own ship, the SS Roseley was captured by the Japanese, although I can't confirm his first name, is there any way of finding this out?
The RSR from England may have worked for White Star Lines.
Any help in finding details of Captains by this name at these times that may link the information I have from England and the information from Singapore would be greatly appreciated.
PS I've found RSR's Competancy Certificates on ancestry.com showing he was a Second Mate in 1890... so if it is the same person, he became Captain between then and 1917. |

I have a record of the S/S Roseley, 4,369 tons departing Fremantle for Sidney on Apr. 9, 1902. The captain is listed as D. M. Robertson. |

Thank you for that... I guess it rules out that it was him. I will keep looking. |
