Hi,

I'm from Australian and am trying to track down information on an ancestor of mine for my family tree, I've been able to track him to Norway based on his Death Certificate but am struggling to navigate the Norwegian geneology sources.

His name (in Australia) was John Pearson. He died in Australian 22nd March 1913, his death certificate states he was 76 but his gravestone states he was 77. I have no date of birth or names of his parents, only that the Death Certificate says he was born in in "Karagira, Norway", which I suspect is a mispelling of a county or province.

The only other useful information I have is that he lived in New South Wales for 54 years, however that doesn't necessarily mean that he arrived in Australia then or that he originally arrived in New South Wales. I have combed through the arrivals histories of Australia's shipping records without much luck.

I do know he married when he arrived in Australia.

If anyone could put me on the right track to finding out more (or any information on him) it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

T Pearson

Tricky! Initial analysis:

Firstname in Norway:
John
Johan
Johannes

Lastname in Norway:
Pedersen
Peersen
Persen
Petersen
Pettersen

Born: 1836-1837 in Karagira, Norway. Possibly Kragerĝ, Telemark?
Emigrated to Oceania ab. 1859 (?)

Sounds like he could have been a seaman...

Hi

The son of Peter Wenneberg; Johan Carl is still living in Norway in the 1865 census:

I guess this rules him out as your John Pearson.

That's the guy Kare. I have tracked down his Certificate of Naturalisation, it confirms that he was born in kragero, and also says he arrived in Australia in 1860 on the ship "Oscar".

Hi Tim,

I know this is a very late post but have just now joined this site.

It sounds as though this John Pearson could very well be my great, great grandfather. We have just been doing the family tree also and one family member still lives on the original land grant which was allotted to John and his wife.
Would love to hear whether you found any more info. and if the same man, give you any info. which might be of interest to your family tree search.

Regards,
janray.

Hi Tim
Not sure if you still look at this site.
I've only just discovered it - and would like to touch base.
I think I have the same John Pearson in my line. Died in Lawson in 1913.
The records I have indicate - His parents died early in his life, and at 8 years old he went to the USA to live with relatives. He joined the US Navy as a young man and was serving on a naval ship when he came to Sydney on tour. He and his mate Larson decided that they wanted to stay in Sydney, and deserted ship. It is said that this Larson changed his name to Lawson, and was the father of Henry Lawson, author and poet.
If you think it is the same man perhaps you could make contact with me.
