I also have been trying to get the bygdebboks, from Oppland, but the librarys all say they are unavailable. We have to either buy them or go to the Universities that have them. Which for a lot of people, which I am one of, cannot do.So is there any other way to get this information and where and how much are these books? My husbands family are from 5 of the 6 areas of Oppland and would probably cost a fortune to aquire all books. Would appreciate any input on this subject. Thanks Lee

On the Norwegian site: "Slektsbiblioteket"

http://www.slektsbiblioteket.com/

under "Kildedatabasen", you'll find volunteers who are willing to do look-ups in Norwegian "bygdebooks".

I am looking also looking for a Bygdeboker. I want to purchase the Luster Kommune Book 4 for the Gaupne area. Does anyone know where I could purchase this book? I called Vesterheim and they do not have it and they told me to contact book stores in Oslo. I am hoping to buy it on online.
Thanks, Jim

I will write an article with information related to bydebooks.

I will persue the following questions:
- What is a bydebook
- What bygdebooks are issued (might take a while to collect all info)
- Where can you get them

Do any of you have thoughts about other question concerning the topic that should be addressed, let me know.

To search for Bygdeboker to buy try http://www.antikvariat.net/
or http://www.bookfinder.com/
There also was a post on the Norway-L list at roots web about the UND collection this is a quote from the message.
"Thank you for your inquiry. Materials housed in Special Collections do not circulate, including the bygdebok collection. However, we will do some straight forward research in the books for researchers, if the farm name is known. There is a $10.00 research fee for approximately an hour of searching plus $.20/page for photocopies. There is no mailing charge."
This is a link to the UND Guide to Norwegian Bygdebøker page

Thanks Carla for those useful "bygdebok" links. Maybe you would like to join me in setting up a Bygdebooks resource page? I could need some help from people who have experience with using bygdebooks outside Norway.
