I could use your help again. I'm trying to figure out if a Torger Johnson who is buried in the Perry, Dane county, Wisconsin (1827-1888) is a distant uncle Targie Johnson.

My 3rd great grandmother Mari (Johnsdatter) Swendson and her brother Halvor Johnson both had lived in that same section of Perry in the 1850-1860.

Here are some Norwegian records for my Uncle Tarjie
Tarjie Birth Record #11
Emigration 1839 Record for family #4
1839 Migration Record #12
1850 Migration Record #5

I could find two items documenting the Torger Johnson here:
quote:
History of Dane County. page 1101 TORGER JOHNSON, Sec. 17; P. 0. Perry; born July 15, 1828, in Nedenas Amt, Christiansand Stift, Norway. Married in Norway, Kari Tollefsdatter ; came to America, and settled on Sec. 16, Perry, late in 1853

quote:
Perry Settlement book for Halvor Johnson and there was one: page 69 Daleyville School district, residence #38 Halvor Johnson and his brother Torger Johnson operated the adjoining farm at #45.

If I could find the marriage record for Torger and Kari that might help nail this one wayor the other. Thank you in advance for any assistance!

One thing on the contrary side of the ledger is Nissedal is a different place than Nedenas Amt.

You are right, there are two big cons...
  • Nissedal vs. Nedenas Amt.

  • Birth dates July 15, 1828 vs Aug 16, 1827

I've seens some of these books have wrong info. For instance the reference to the brother Knud stated he was from Nissedal but he was born in Flosta, Dypvåg, Aust-Agder.

I've tried to find a birth record for a Torger in Nedenas or the marriage record to either prove or disprove.

Nedenes Amt is today called Aust-Agder fylke (county)

Nissedal is today located in the neighboring county Telemark, just a 30 min drive from Åmli. Remember also that the borders have changed throughout the history.

Terje Jonsen Tvedt, born 14 July 1828 in Åmli parish (Nedenes/Aust-Agder county): Åmli churchbook A 6, page 87
- married 15 July 1851 to Kari Tellefsdatter Høgevold: Åmli church book A 7, page 249

The given name is the same, all variations of the same name:
Torger (Danish spelling) = Torgeir (modern Norwegian spelling) = Torje (Vest-Agder accent) = Tarjei/Tarje (Setesdal/Telemark accent) = Terje (Aust-Agder accent)

Thanks! It would have been cool if the connection was proved.

I really appreciate the help keeping the tree correct. Thank you so much!
