I have some hand written notes that show my Great Great Grandfather Hans Johnson being born 1839 in Hamer Norway to John Johnson and Helen Severson. Hans would have had two brothers, Sever being born April 15th, 1842 in Christina, Norway and John being born January 19th1848 near Hedmarken. Any help is appreciated.
Which of the persons above actually emigrated to the US? Where did they settle? When you checked US censuses for additional information what immigration years were given for any of the family members born in Norway?
The locations given in the notes are fairly scattered and 'near Hedmarken' would be a huge area. Would the family still be in Norway for the 1865 census? The info in the US censuses would help you determine that.

Even with the place names incomplete or mispelled and persons names that have been adapted to American styles that is better and more complete information to start with.
The place names -- Norway is divided into 'flyke' - like provinces or states - any basic world atlas will show you that among the names of those flyker is HEDMARK. (Notice the similarity to 'Hedemarken'??) You can learn about Hedmark and possibly figure out what was really meant by "Hamer". https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Hedmark_County,_Norway
There is no Sumner County is Wisconsin - so you must be referring to a town. A map of Wisconsin shows that Sumner is in Barron County Wisconsin so that is where you'd first look for information about that family. But another website says Sumner is in Trempealeau County?? There is an Osseo in Trempealeau Co. WI. The first born daughter born in Norway (there is no Christina so that must be figured out) and the next child in Barron Co. Wisconsin so you can deduce that they emigrated between 1869 and 1874. They might appear int he 1865 Norwegian census databases and the actual locality there where the daughter was born and they last lived could be accurately identified.
Township of Sumner, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. I do use familysearch.org quite a bit and its great for the states but I haven't seen it work that well for overseas. Again, appreciate the help.
Familysearch.org is very good for Norway too and improving all the time. They have hundreds of volunteers going through the Norwegian parish records and indexing births and marriages for many many parts of Norway as we speak. The collection grows daily.
The library catalog at Familysearch.org indicates that the church records for Harmar, Hedmark, Norway before about 1853 will be found in the books for the district of Vang, Hedmark. So if Hans Johannessen was born in Hamar he could be expected to be listed in those parish records.
Hans Johannessen was not born in Hamar, Hedmark. He was born in Oslo (Kristiania) on 29 Aug 1839 to Johannes Nilsen and Elen Hansdatter. His younger brother was Syver Johannessen, born 15 April 1842 in Vallset, Hedmark, Norway to Johannes Nilsen and Elen Hansdatter.
So a question... Hans Johannessen was born in Oslo on August 29th, 1839 although I think on the marriage record to Karen Oline you could make the case the date looks more like August 8th, 1839. https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/1094/309
His parents were Johannes Nilsen and Elen Hansdatter... I've found the christening listed in Garnison Menight, Oslo, Askershus, Norway on Family Search. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N4YC-DMN
I think this looks like his confirmation but it's now up in Romedal which is a bit away from Oslo? https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/279/pk00000001643190 And that lists his birthplace as Christiania - that is an old name for Oslo, correct?
Lastly they were married in Hole, near Honefoss which is Karen Oline's Birthplace.
My question is all of the bouncing around is making it tough to find his father... I've got it listed as Johannes Nilssen and have three potential but since I can't find his age in any of Hans information I haven't been able to clearly identify who is father or mother listed as Ellen Hansdatter is. Any idea's?
A tough search but you could start by looking at the record of the baptisms of the sons. Here is the original record for Syver. A farm name is attached to the couple which looks like a version of Kaare-Fjæstad also spelled Kaarefjestad. So the question is which of the couple is associated with that farm. Looking at the list of witnesses I see several of them have a version of that farm name attached to them, including a Niels.
His father must have been in the army since Hans was bapt. i the Garrison congregation at Akershus Fortress. I cant read his military grade, G.....Nr 2. (Grenader??) Enlisted Nr 2.
Here is an interesting find. I think that they had a son early on in their lives. Probably in Stange parish of Hedmark.
Nils Johannesen in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927 Name: Nils Johannesen Gender: Male Birth Date: 22 okt 1828 (22 Oct 1828) Baptism Date: 23 nov 1828 Baptism Place: Hedmark, Norway Father: Johannes Nilsen Mother: Elen Hansdatter FHL Film Number: 124375
In 1865 a Elen Hansdatter left Romedal for Stange, she is listed as having been born in 1801.
