I am endeavouring to find the ship and date my Great Grandfather emmigrated to Australia.
His name was Julius Johansen, born in Tonsberg on 3 Jan 1858 and arrived in Australia prior to 1888. As far as we are aware, he came by himself not with his family.

Tønsberg is a coastal town so he could have traveled with a cargo ship, it happened against payment.
The main dep. port in Eastern-Norway was Oslo via England or Hamburg Germany (where ship was changed)

I could not find Julius in the 1885 census for Tønsberg or Nøtterøy where he was born or among the em. leaving Oslo.

Hi!
I have read your information on Noway-Heritage, and thank you to you and the other in your forum for all the very useful information. Olaf Eugen Gustafson, Susanna Halvorsen's son was my great grandfather from my fathers' mothers family. I have established a family page on www.myheritage.com, the Andreassen family, Andreassen is my last name. So as far as i can see Julius is my great great grandmother's brother.

S.A.
