My grandfather came from Halden, Norway. His name was Oskar Andreas(sen) Thuesen. His father was Martin Andreas(sen) and may later have changed his name to Thuesen because of the farm that he lived on. Perhaps the 41 Thuesens still in Norway may shed some light on it. I cannot speak nor write Norweign. I appreciate any help in this matter.

Hello!
I don´t think the Thuesen surname is any farm name. It has it´s origin from the male name Thue. The name is quite rare in Norway.
I have the same name among some of my ancestors too. This family lives in Skjeberg, Østfold, Norway. Maybe the same family???

I've been slowly compiling a family genealogy and have a few notes about Marie Thuesen (born Knudsen). She was born April 26, 1908, one of two daughter born to Karl Emil Knudsen (great-uncle) and Gunhild Katrine Vebestad of Hisøy.She died February, 20. 1997 in Oslo, and had apparently lived there from at least the 1970's.
I haven't been able to discover anything about her marriage, so your comment re: rarity of the name Thuesen has made me very curious.

PS. Karl's brother Adolf married Anna Andreassen from Åkerøya, but none of the names in the tthuesen post look familiar from her family.

Hello Tim;
Your list of cousins, etc. piqued my curiosity. A brief search of the 1900 census and Oslo emigrants on Digitalarkivet yielded none of your family, despite trying several variations of their names (ie. Martinsen and Andreas(s)en; unfortunately, very popular names). Several members of my family also stayed "below the radar" for quite some time because they had variously used their father's given name (patronymic) and then his surname.
What is your source for the births and baptisms? Are Karsten and Oskar the only ones who emigrated? Do you know your great-grandmother's surname? Do you have any later info about Elin and Valborg?
If you're interested, I'll check the passenger manifests for Karsten and Oskar at the National Archives. They sometimes contain revealing notes.

I don't know if you already have the manifest images from Ellis Island data you noted on 22 July, but here are a few highlights from the National Archives and Records Administration microfilm of Passenger Ship Arrival Manifests 1820-1957 - T715:
Roll 357 SS Hellig Olav, 18 May, 1903, Page Z, Line 1:
Carsten A. Thuesen, 15 years, 4 months old, enroute to a friend, Charles Dinnes of Box 72 New Rockford, North Dakota. Line 2 of the manifest lists Signe J. D. Wallen, 17 years, 8 months old, enroute to the same address.
Does her name ring a bell?
Roll 2829 SS Stavangerfjord, 7 September, 1920, Page 24 Line 30:
Oscar A. Thuesen, 29, Railway Worker
Josefine Thuesen, Reberslagergate 6, Fredrikshald is noted as his closest foreign relative.
His original destination is given as New York, NY, but has been crossed out & overwritten by hand as Atlantic City. NJ.
He is noted as having previously been in New York for 9 years, but the entry is crossed out and over-typed to read 1903/19.
He gives a local contact and address as Friend: Josef Sholin - Pleasantvill, New York City. Pleasantvill, New York has been crossed out and overwritten as "Atlantic City. NJ"
