I'm trying to track down my great-great grand father who apparently went from Norway to USA i 1868.
Lorents Greger was born in Dale, Kvæfjord, Norway Sep 20 1827. http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9633&idx_id=9633&uid=ny&idx_side=-71
Although I'm not 100% sure it's the same person, from the records at digitalarkivet.no I am fairly sure it's the same man. http://www.digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=1&filnamn=em03011867tillegg&gardpostnr=8371&personpostnr=8371#nedre
From the records here at Norway Heritage I've found him again, leaving from Christiania (Oslo), Norway, departure to Hull, England 17 July 1868 with the steamer SS Argo. http://www.norwayheritage.com/udvandret.asp?type=passengerlist&ps=101667&jo=127
This is where I'm stranded, I can't find him in any other records (perhaps because he used a slightly different name in US?). I have assumed the journey from Norway to England took about 3 days. I would assume he went further to Liverpool by train, and from there to the port of New York. If the journey from England to New York took about 10-15 days would it be safe to assume he arrived in New York late July or early in August?
I've been looking briefly at the records at http://archive.org/stream/passengerlistsof0299unit and http://archive.org/stream/passengerlistsof0300unit Can i assume he would be in there somewhere? I find it hard to read without any clue what (and when) I'm actually looking for.
Some written sources says he eventually moved to Chicago, but I have not seen any evidence of this anywhere, nor do I have any idea where they got this information from.
I would appreciate any help where to look further. Any hints on where to look and what sources to use. |

There is a Family Tree on Ancestry.com that contains a person with this same name and birth date. He is listed as
Lorentz Greger Christensen Hveding Birth 20 SEP 1827 in Kvæfjord, Troms-1065554004-1065553846
Married in 1862 to Anne Maria Johansdatter Birth 1833 in Sarpsborg, Østfold-1065553844
With three children including Bernhard Sisilius Lorentsen Hveding Birth 1864 in Sarpsborg, Østfold-1065553844-1065553784
Found here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=424&idx_id=424&uid=ny&idx_side=-76 See number 41
Unfortunately there is no information in this Family Tree to indicate what happened to him. However the Sarpsborg connection does indicate that you may well have the right person in your emigration reference. |

This is the correct person
I have some additional information on him at http://www.disnorge.no/slektsforum/viewtopic.php?p=571300#571300 but this is only concerning his family matters in Norway.
He was indeed married in Sarpsborg, Norway.
They had 4 children there, the last of the four was born July 1 1868, just a few days before he left for America.
It seems though, his wife Anne Marie went to America as well in October 1870, according to a church book: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=5772&idx_id=5772&uid=ny&idx_side=-193 (right hand side, No 7) Only three children are listed with her, so one of the four probably died.
This is new information to me so i will spend the day looking for them as well, to see if there are any trace of them on any ship.
It it of course still of great help finding either of them in any passenger list. |

This is of great help, thanks a lot guys. All of this looks very promising, I might end up having family alive "over there".
Oh, by the way: the 1870 census, doesn't it seem a bit strange? If his wife came in Nov 1870, how could she be registered? I notice on the form though, the zero in 1870 has a / written over it. Could it mean the 1870 census was actually done in January 1871? |

Yes it does seem strange. The printed column headings say the residents on the date of June 1870, perhaps they had problems getting it in gear for June 1870? Stranger things have happened, I'm sure. |

I found out about the strange / in the 1870 Census:
This is a so called second enumeration. A second count. The first enumeration was done in June 1870. Complains were made about the count and they had to re-count. This was done about 6 months later, in December 1870 - January 1871. |
