Searching for any information on James Sanborn I who had a son, James Sanborn II D.O.B. January 14, 1856, who was a merchant marine that traveled from Norway by way of England to Hawaii where he married Punahoa Holi Moano around 1885. Any information on either James I or II would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

In response to the question of James Sanborn:
My grandmother, Julia Sanborn, was one of nine children of James and Mary Sanborn of Ookala, Hawaii. She was born in 1916 on the homestead on Ookala. We believe that there is a realation but her father James Sanborn would have been born later than 1856. Please contact us with any additional information.

Hi,

James Sanborn, who passed away in 1900 and married a Hawaiian lady (the only name I have for her is Punohu which is very similar to the name of the lady you mention) in Ookala had a son named James as well. My Tutu remembers him - he was called Jim. Among the other siblings - and I can't remember them all, were Robert (my grandmother's father) and Lily. Robert was born in 1893, and though I don't know the birthdates of the others, James' son James (Robert's brother) had to be at least 16 by the time the Julia you mention was born. So, it is possible that there is a connection. My grandmother has also mentioned a story of a land issue among James (Jim), Robert, Lily and the other siblings. I think, James (Jim) bought some land from another brother(?) of theirs in the Ookala area which could put him right where Julia Sanborn was born (I don't know Julia Sanborn, btw).

Hope this helps. I don't know anything about James Sanborn, but I am on the lookout.

Aloha, My name is Susan Sanborn Barton and I have been living on the mauka Sanborn Homestead for 33 years (James Sanborn II). When we first arrived here, the main house was is such dissaray. There were many papers and articles that were very interesting.
One was a letter seeking a James Sambo for an inheritance from Bergen, Norway. Others were the newspaper articles desribing the disappearance of Mr. Sanborn and his subsequent arrest many years later. He had faked his death and moved to Honolulu. I have been trying to research the maiden name of his wife. I gave the papers to one of his daughters, Mary Nishi and I believe they went in an album that her daughter, Donna Santos, has. I met old Mary Sanborn at the Nishi residence many years ago...

Yours truly, Susan Barton (I am a Sanborn whose family supposedly originated from England. Research goes back to a Sambourne)
