Hi! I'm searching relatives in USA. Two of my grandfather's siblings emigrated from Norway to Minnesota and moved on to North Dakota. One of them left Norway in 1900 and the other one in 1904. I have searched the Ellis Island records and different sources through FamilySearch Library and Ancestry.com. I also have some very limited information from my grandfather from the 1950's.
I have discoverd that one of the emigrants, Karoline (Lina) Amundsen married a George Gilbertson and got four children. I can follow the family through different US censuses. Sometimes she is also named Lena. I also discovered that one of the four children, Gladys Gilbertson born in 1914, married George Montgomery born in 1910. The marriage took place in 1942 in Glasgow, Montana. After 1940 it is difficult to find records except for death records. George Gilbertson died in 1947 and Caroline in 1954. They are buried at Bethel Lutheran Cemetery in Bergen, North Dakota. This I found in the database of Find a Grave.
And by luck I also found a website on faqs.org with People Search. Then I could browse surnames in US death records. I discovered a George Montgomery, birth in 1910 and death in 2001, and a Gladys Montgomery, birth in 1914 and death in 1997. Both had been living in Minot, ND. Her zipcode was 58701 and his was 58702. Maybe he moved after her death.
To me this seems to be a possible match. I also found some information on a website for the Montgomery Family. It says that George Montgomery was married to Gladys Gilbertson, and he was active in the Lutheran Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher. But there was no information about her or if they had any children. I have tried to get in contact with some of the churches in Minot, but without any "solution" so far.
Does anybody know anything about this family and if there are any descendants? Or has a hint about what to try next?
With regards

There is an obituary for George Ransom Montgomery ( 19 Feb 1910 - 14 Sep 2001) in the Minot Daily from 18 Sep 2001.
Gladys L Montgomery (10 Jan 1914 - 26 Jun 1997)

Thank you very much! I've started to make a synopsis about the traces I found after Petter and Karoline, and this could be a nice illustration as well as a documnettation of my findings.

Yes, I know. I have found three of four children married, Garfield, Elma and Gladys. But not a trace of Clarence, the fourth child. I have also found the graveyard for George and Lena (Caroline) ( Bethel Lutheran Cemetery in Bergen, ND), and the gravestone for Garfield with wife Matilda (Mathilde Herbransen) in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fargo. The source is Find a Grave. I'm not very trained in finding sources, so a link to various articles would be most appreciated. Now I'm eager to find out if there is any descendant of George and Lena. Elma married Floyd Zimmermann, and by the cencus in 1940 they are in Roosvelt, Montana. They had two children, Lois M 3 years and Donald L 1 year. Due to the fact that they already had two children in 1940, it would probably be easier to find one of them, but by luck I managed to trace the death of George and Gladys, so hopefully I might find some descendants around Minot.

The only relatives of Garfield living in November 1972 was:
- His wife Mathilda Gilbertson
- His step-daughter Helen Walla. (Husband Herman Walla born about 1911 in N.D.)
- His sister Gladys L Montgomery from Minot, ND.
- His sister Elma Zimmermann from Poplar, Mont.

Thus; Clarence Gilbertson born ab. 1913 must be dead by Nov 1972.

Thank you, Lyndal40. Yes, I think it must be the same person. Maybe his name was Lloyd, because in the US cencus in 1910 he is also called Lloyd in the primary source. Link: http://interactive.ancestry.com/7884/31111_4330238-00811?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return
And Jan Peter: Does your assumption excludes any other relatives today? For example that Gladys and George had any children? Or if David L or Lois M had children?

Thank you! Yes, and their children born in 1937 and 1939 (see lyndal40) could be something to try finding. Maybe I should try som phone books for Montana.

Thank you very much! It could be, but this guy has Hans and Julia as parents. Even if some records are inaccurate, I don't think that could be an error writing for George and Lena or Lina. I havn't searched for George Gilbertson's origin, but he entered the US from Norway 1 year old in 1881. He was porbably a Jørgen Gulbrandsen before the family emigrated.

Lloyd & Elma Zimmerman are buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, Brown County, Kansas.

There is one Donald Zimmerman in Hiawatha, KS today. He is born 1939, which fits with the 1940-census from Wolf Point, Roosevelt, MT. He seems to be married to Sharon Zimmerman, born 1946.
