Something is not quite right. That Ida is born about 1881 way, way off from 1850... |

Ida is the daughter. She also married someone named Anderson and another Swede like her mother did. |

I have tried searching Digitalarkivet, but find nothing. My gg-grandmother's obituary says she was born Betsy Ann Johnson on 28 Feb 1850 in Bergin, Norway. She was baptized and confirmed in Norway. She came to America at the age of 18, making her home in Northwood, Worth, Iowa. (All of that is from the obituary.)
I guess Bergin was Bergen town, western Norway.

I suspected Bergin was misspelled in the obituary. |

I think I'd look long and hard for Betsy in the 1925 Iowa State Census. That census asked everyone for their father's name and their mother's name (maiden name) and it MIGHT have some notation of when she immigrated to the US.
I agree that she was in Pocahontas Co. IA for the 1910 census and she is shown as dying in that same county in 1934.
I grew up not far from that county and am still puzzled that I've never heard of Swan Lake (except of course as a ballet). Her burial location in Laurens - of course, I know where that is.
I will definitely look for her in Iowa. I have never been able to find her on the 1920 census, but know the address where she was living in Great Falls, Montana, at that time. (I have a copy of a letter she wrote that has a return address.) Even checked the census by the address, and she's not there. On the 1930 census she is living in Ordway, Brown, South Dakota, with her son Oscar and his family. So she was moving around a bit, but perhaps was back in Iowa. It's worth checking! |

Thank you all for taking an interest in this. Obviously you all are better and finding information in Digitalarkivet! :-) I'm amazed at all that was found. My work is cut out for me! |

I believe Anne Elisabeth Grieg b. 1853 is the same as Elisa Grieg, teacher, in 1885

A shot in the dark.
Anne Lisabeth Jensdatter (not Johnsdatter) b. on farm Aspaas Feb. 28. 1850 in "Bergstaden" Røros. Parents; Jens Rasmussen and Anne Lisabeth Mikkelsdatter #39. She had a brother Peter. Anne Lisabeth 16 with her parents and brother Peter on farm Lillegaden 1865
She was confirmated June 11. 1865. Place of birth; Bergstaden, ca half page down #1
I do not know if she emigrated or what happened to her between 1865 and-75. She is not on Røros in the 1875 census, her parents still lived there.

Well it really wouldn't be a whole lot of looking if you looked at each of the churches in Bergen which have baptismal registers for 1849-1853: I looked only for Betsy born on any date or any B name born on the exact date in Domkirken:
Domkirken Nykirken Korskirken Maria St. Jorgens Hospital |

A heroic effort, all.
The most certain fact about Betsy is her birth day and month, stated in her obituary. Is there any other source of that day and month? (the month would be in the 1900 census if it can be found - also her year of immigration). Her first and middle and last names can all be different in Norway and also could change position (Betsy could be a form of the middle name on a birth record).
Therefore Kåre's lass - Anne Lisabeth Jensdatter b. on farm Aspaas Feb. 28. 1850 in "Bergstaden" Røros - is a strong candidate.
Nancy, I sent you an email. :D |

Time frame wise it would be interesting to see if Sweden is a "jumping off" point or a cover-up for a trip to America.... |
