My grandfather left Bergen Harbor 3-19-1885 Cunard line.
I think he would have made the Aurania 1, leaving Liverpoool 3-21-1885 and arriving New York 3-29-1885. I just want to know what ship he took from Bergen to Liverpool (or Hull). Is there a way to find out? He was Arent Andreassen Fosse from Hammer, age 18. I know he got here and I have the data for his emigration at Bergen. The ISTG does not have the Aurania done yet as far as I can tell. Any help will be appreciated. Elaine

The only source for finding the (likely) ship they departed from Bergen is the Maritime intelligence column in the contemporary Bergen newspapers. So when you know the date they departed from Bergen, you can check what ships were cleared to sail from Bergen to England with passengers on the actual date.

The reason is that there are no passenger lists kept for ships arriving with transmigrants in England, and the name of the feeders were not logged by the Bergen police in the emigration records.

According to Bergens tidende March 9th, 1885, the steamship Argo (Capt. Lawson) left for Hull 14th of March. Would that be a logical "feeder"?

Hei Nina

It seams to be too early, as the records according to Toelita shows the departure as March 19th. Can you check your dates again?

How nice it would have been if we could get the time to go through all of those Bergen newspapers one day, we should have completed the ship index by adding the Bergen and Stavanger departures recorded in those newspapers.

Hi to both of you!

Thanks so much for answering. I should consider myself lucky as I only started 6 months ago and I already have both my grandfathers birthdates and places. I guess I have too much time to think and wonder about they got here. You have such interesting stories on here. You should be very proud of this site.

Børge! The next departure from Bergen to Hull was 21st of March. There seems to have been one every Saturday. Nina

Then I think the "21st of March" departure is the most likely one if they went via Hull. However, there was also a route between Bergen and Newcastle, manly maintained by a Bergen owned ship called S/S Norge (owned by Jebsen?), so that is also a possibility.

According to the newspaper Bergens Tidende (BT), March 18th 1885; the Wilson Line steamship “Tasso” was to leave Bergen the 21st at 01:00 night/morning via Stavanger to Hull, England. Captain Moore of the Wilson Line. Tasso arrived Hull on the 23rd at 10:00, morning (BT, March 23).
The Cunard Line steamship Umbia left Liverpool March 28th and arrived New York April 6th with the passengers that left Bergen March 21th (BT, April 8th)
Cunard Lines agent in Bergen 1885 was Joachim Engelsen, Strandgaden 122 at Petanebryggen.
