I would like to find any information on the following Farms, 1. Rølles/Rødles in the Botne Sande -Vestfold area. 2. Dyve farm in the Strømm(en) /Hurum Parish in Buskerud County. 3. Kiste-eie a sub farm under Kiste. 4. Lihjell or Liajeld in the Sundalen, Møre og Romsdal area. 5. Lamager in the Strømsø area.
Any specific farm information, specific locations, photos or general information and history would be terrific assistance. Any Bygdebok information regarding these farms would also be amazing as it probably contains family information related to the farm itself. |

Thanks Hopkins I've tried some of those suggestions such as the LDS however that venue seemed a dead end as everything I tried was not available in Canada. Some of the listers and lookups have tried to assist me to no evail and that's why I posted here in case Bygdebok holders were on the forums as well. I did find one farm & Bygdebok online that I did not list, however I cannot read Norwegian so it is a long slow process. I will in the meantime try "Worldcat" listings and see where that takes me. I posted this here as many of the veteran users may possibly already have posts & information due to previous user requests or as I've found out they are able to locate information in hours which would take me months or years. |

Hi, I've learned in this forum about FINN kart maps. Here's my attempt to locate Lihjell in Sunndal, Møre og Romsdal. To find locations, type your farm name or other place name into the search box and click "Søk." Doesn't always work - but if not, seek a larger place nearby.

Yes, a Norwegian bygdebok is a real challenge (a wonderful happy challenge) for those of us who don't speak or read the language. But a Norwegian-English dictionary is of great help and besides - we get to dance about and holler and celebrate when we've figured out every new little bit of our family heritage 'the hard way'. I can advise that it does get easier with more time in the effort and the dancing gets better with more practice too.
Let me add one thing - if you decide to go to the US to visit a holding library I suggest you strongly consider the Family History Library in Salt Lake City Utah. They have an amazing collection of Norwegian books, excellent copier and/or download to 'flash drive' facilities easily available and almost always someone available at the desk in that part of the International library who can try to help with Norwegian. Some good hotels nearby too. |

Wow Kåre that is a gold mine of history, thank you for that!! I was searching out the farms using the Finn kart maps and I see a trend where all the farms have another nearby with Haugen attached. Such as Rølles and Rølleshaugen, Dyve and Dyvehaugen etc... What is the meaning of this? |

Not sure what Rølles and Dyve means, every farmname in Norway has a meaning, some more than 1000 years, and the names has changed over the centuries, but the ending -haugen means heap/mound. Lots og Haugen farms in Norway.

I see lots of "farm name" - heap/mound around. I've found one for every farm I was seeking info on and others so I guess then that it refers to the actual farming plot of land related to the farm itself. |
