I'm trying to decipher the handwriting of this note on the right side of the baptismal record of Maren Sophie Christiansdatter (b. 1820, Sørum, Akershus).
This baptismal record puts her mother's name first, which seems rather unusual from the format of the other records on the same page. The other records that used this format also had a similar note on the side. Here's a sample:
I can think of a few things that it might be (illegitimate birth, deceased father), but I'm hoping somebody else can tell me for sure. Does anybody know? Thanks so much! |

I think the note says "Udenf. Ægteskap", ie. "outside marriage".
The second word is for sure Ægteskap ("marriage"), but I'm not convinced about the first word. It looks like it says lig***aa ???

The word cannot start with an "L". See the small squiggle above the letter? That is a mark which is utilized to mark a "u" and a couple of other letters to clarify which letter. It's similar to underlining 6 or 9 in applications when the digit could be flipped and miscontrued. |

In other records we find Udenf Ægteskab #17, Udenf Ægtesk #18 and Udenfor Ægtesk #20, in other words, all saying "Udenfor Ægteskab".

Is says: Udenfor ægteskab, -outside marriage. When the child was born outside marriage, the baptismal record puts the mother's name first |

Yes I see it now. It is "Udenf. Ægteskap", ie. "outside marriage". I thought for some time that the second letter looked more like a "g", but it is actually a "d" with an additional circle at the top... |
