Johan Henrik M Abel b.1862 in NO Vefsn arrived Oct 1887 with wife Martha Pernelle Martinusdatter Madsen b.1864 MR Kvernes. In Brooklyn for 5 yrs & then Eliz, NJ to work at Singer.
Anyone know what church Norwegians would have gone to in Brooklyn at that time?
Also, looking to confirm Margit Abel's birthdate--Jan 1888 in Brooklyn?
Anyone know of any Abels (or Lossius's) from this area in Norway in Brooklynm at same time or prior to 1887?
Thanks

Two church names which come up frequently in Brooklyn and New York City are Our Saviour's and Trinity. The ELCA databases are found in Ancestry and Archives.com. A search in Archives.com ELCA baptisms did not find Margit Abel.

Did they leave Norway as Abel or did they leave using a patronymic name?

The earliest record of baptism for an Abel in New York in the ELCA database is for Jenny b 30 July 1870 to Johan Albert Abel and Car. Ambrosia Nath. Andresen at Our Saviour's. The baptism didn't reflect the parents' place of origin.

Italiangen website includes NY metro area births, marriages, deaths - not limited to Italians. http://italiangen.org/records-search/births.php

Old Fulton Postcards website has indexed many historic newspapers - a place to seek news of Abel and Lossius family. Ditto Chronicling America website.

Green-Wood cemetery seems to have been an oft chosen burial site for Norwegians in Brooklyn. The online database is not yet complete; lists 100 people with surname Abel:

Off the record, but it is getting late and I have this on my computer I want to share before I close.
Do you know that Johan Henrik M. Abel b. 1862 is in family with the great mathematician Niels Henrik Abel?

The whole Abel family described from Mathias Abel came to Norway from Denmark ca 1650 and up to 1899 when the book "Abel, den store matematikers slekt" (Abel, the great mathematicans family) on 224 pages was published in "old" Norwegian, not easy to translate with a translater if it is not done on a Google book.
Johan Henriks father Mathias Abel, his wife and 7 children starts on page 149

No wonder there is so much confusion about the birth date and place of Margit. This record would indicate that her younger brother was born in Norway, making it likely I guess that she would also have been born in Norway.

Henry Christoffer Lossius Abel
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Henry Christoffer Lossius Abel
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 13 jun 1890
Baptism Date: 28 sep 1890
Baptism Place: New York City, New York
Father: Johan Hendrik Merthen Abel
Mother: Martha Pernelle
FHL Film Number: 1283408
Reference ID: bk 5 p 29

But he is also listed as being born in Brooklyn, but maybe just baptised there?

Henrik K L Abel
in the New York, New York, Birth Index, 1878-1909
Name: Henrik K L Abel
Birth Date: 13 Jun 1890
Recorded Birth Year: 1890
Birth Place: Kings, New York, USA
Certificate Number: 5312

This is likely Johan Abel emmigrating from Norway in Dec of 1887 making it likely that any children born after 1887 would have been born at sea or in America.

Travelling with his brother? Listed as married but no wife travelling with him.

Norway has created databases of events that happened to Norwegians in the U.S.A. Ancestry.com is drawing that baptism record out of a Norwegian database, but the event happened in New York. I posted Henry's baptism earlier as well, with additional info. "Norway, Select Baptisms" is simply Ancestry's database name. Doesn't mean the child was born in Norway - the record says only that he was baptized in NY (at the Norwegian Seaman's Church). The parents are residing on 19th Street in Brooklyn, and Henry's birth is registered as New York; ergo he was born in New York.

Confusing, I agree!

Johan and Ole Mathias Abel immigrating 1887, here:

LOL, we posted same time. The OP can write to New Jersey for the 1888 birth record, probably or maybe Union county, if no one finds it online.

How nice of you to reply even though tired! Yes, I am aware of the prominence of Niels Henrik Abel. And I have the "Abel, den....." book....pulled it off the internet and spent weeks translating pertinent parts myself. Absolute gold mine for me! Thanks again.

You are welcome.
The family name Abel is protected by the Law.
You are fortunate to have a separate family book.
